Alpha E37 fault code: low mains supply voltage explained

E37, shown as plain 37 on some Alpha displays, means the boiler is not getting enough mains supply voltage to run. Here is what Alpha's own manuals say, what is safe to check yourself, and when it needs an engineer.

What does the Alpha E37 fault code mean?

The Alpha E37 fault code means the electrical supply reaching the boiler has dropped too low for it to operate. Alpha's own fault table words it as “Low supply voltage”, described as “Insufficient supply voltage to operate boiler”, with the possible causes given as “Check mains power supply / Check for bad cable connections etc”. That row appears in Alpha's installation and user instruction manuals for its domestic ranges. It is an electrical fault, not a water pressure fault and not a flow sensor fault.

Depending on the model, the display shows it with the E prefix as E37 or as the bare number 37. They are the same fault. Alpha specifies a 230/240 V ~ 50 Hz mains supply, fused at 3 A, so 37 is the control board saying that what reaches its terminals is below the limits it needs.

A power cut or a brief dip in the incoming supply can be enough to trigger it, so once the supply is back to normal the code is worth clearing with a single reset. A 37 that keeps coming back is different, because it can point at bad connections or a failing control board inside a live gas appliance.

Why does the Alpha 37 code appear?

Code 37 points at the electricity reaching the boiler, not at the gas side, the water side or the flame. Alpha's possible-causes column is short and blunt: check the mains power supply, and check for bad cable connections. The same manuals tell the engineer to carry out electrical supply and connection checks and check all fuses as a first fault-finding step.

In practice that is four things. The incoming mains voltage can genuinely be low, during a power cut or a dip on an overloaded supply. The wiring between the fused spur and the boiler can be loose, corroded or poorly terminated. The property side can be at fault, with a tripped breaker or RCD, a blown spur fuse or a switch turned off. Or the boiler's control board, or its power supply section, can be failing.

What you can safely check yourself

Because 37 is a supply fault, several useful checks sit outside the boiler and are safe for a homeowner. Work through them in order.

1. Check whether there has been a power cut. Flashing clocks around the house are the giveaway, and the code may clear once the supply is back to normal.

2. Check the consumer unit for a tripped breaker or RCD, and reset it once. If it trips straight back, leave it and call a qualified electrician.

3. Check the fused spur, isolator or switch feeding the boiler is on. Alpha's user instructions tell you to switch the boiler on at its mains supply switch, so a switch knocked off while cleaning or decorating is worth ruling out.

4. Glance at the pressure gauge as a general health check, but do not chase it. Pressure is not the cause of 37, which Alpha codes separately as 10.

5. Reset the boiler once. Alpha's user instructions put it carefully: the reset button “can be pressed to try and clear the fault”, and if the fault still occurs you should contact an approved engineer.

Stop there. Do not take the front panel off, do not open the electrical box, and do not test at the terminal block. Avoid repeated resetting too: Alpha's fault table carries a separate code 08 for the maximum number of resets, reached after five in a row.

When to call an engineer

If 37 returns after one reset, or never cleared at all, it needs someone with a meter. The engineer measures the voltage at the boiler's terminal block against Alpha's 230/240 V ~ 50 Hz specification, fused at 3 A, then runs the electrical safety checks the manuals require: earth continuity, resistance to earth, short circuit and polarity. From there they can open the casing to inspect the wiring, the connectors and the control board, and replace the board if it has failed.

Any work with the case off a gas boiler needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. If the fault sits in the property's fixed wiring, the fused spur or the consumer unit rather than in the boiler, a qualified electrician is the right trade. Do not write a recurring 37 off as just a power cut, because a persistent one can be bad connections or a failing board inside a live gas appliance.
