Ideal L3 fault code: no water flow explained
L3, shown on the display as an alternating flashing L and 3, means the boiler cannot sense enough water moving through it. Here is what Ideal's own fault-code list says, what is safe to check yourself, and when it becomes an engineer's job.
What does the Ideal L3 fault code mean?
The Ideal L3 fault code means no water flow. The boiler is not detecting enough water circulating through it, so it locks out to protect itself. Ideal's own fault-code page heads it "Flashing L AND 3 No Water Flow". In everyday terms something is stopping the water moving: low pressure, trapped air, a closed radiator valve, or a pump that has given up.
The display alternates the letter and the number rather than showing them together, so the fault gets written down as L3, as L 3 with a space, and as a flashing L and 3. All three are the same lockout.
It is worth knowing how L3 differs from L1 on the same boiler, because the two overlap. Ideal heads L1 "Flow Temperature Overheat or No Water Flow", so L1 covers the water getting too hot as well as failing to move, while L3 is about the flow itself. The homeowner checks Ideal gives for the two codes are close to identical, so if the display is hard to read, check both against your manual.
Which Ideal boilers show the L3 code?
L3 sits on Ideal's current public fault-code list, alongside L1, L2, L5, L6 and the F codes, so it is not a retired code. That list covers the Ideal ranges that show a flashing letter and number on the display, the Logic family among them.
Code sets do vary between model ranges, so check the code on your display against your own model's guide rather than assuming. Ideal describes a water-flow problem in more than one place: L1 is headed flow temperature overheat or no water flow, and F0 is the no water flow thermistor. Why does the Ideal L3 code appear?
Your boiler heats a small volume of water very quickly and relies on it being carried away round the radiators or through the hot water circuit. If it sits still, the temperature climbs almost at once and the boiler reads that as an absence of flow, so it stops rather than keep firing.
The real question is what is stopping the water moving, and the answers split in two. System-side causes are often yours to put right: pressure has dropped, air has collected, or a radiator valve is closed. Mechanical causes need an engineer: a seized pump, sludge choking the heat exchanger, debris in the plate heat exchanger, or a flow thermistor that is faulty or clipped onto the wrong pipe.
Why does L3 keep coming back after a reset?
A reset clears the lockout and nothing else. If the pump is not turning or the system is sludged, L3 returns as soon as the boiler tries to fire. Ideal's own instruction is to reset once after the checks below, then get in touch quoting the code if it does not clear. Resetting over and over lets the temperature spike inside the heat exchanger, turning a pump replacement into a bigger repair.
One myth is worth killing off. Frozen condensate pipes cause plenty of winter lockouts on Ideal boilers, and many articles copy that onto every L code. Ideal's L3 instructions never mention the condensate pipe, and it is L2 that carries the blockage checks.

What you can safely check yourself
Ideal publishes homeowner steps for L3, and they are the right place to start. Work through them in the order Ideal gives, and press reset only once, at the end.
1. Read the pressure gauge while the system is cold. Ideal asks for 1 to 1.5 bar. If it is lower, top up using the filling loop as your manual describes, stopping at about 1.5 bar.
2. Check the flow and return water isolation valves under the boiler have not been turned off. When a valve is open, its handle or slot points along the direction of the pipe. Look only, do not force anything, and leave the gas isolation valve alone: it has nothing to do with water circulation, and gas work is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
3. Check the thermostatic or wheelhead valve is fully open on every radiator. Leave the lockshield valve alone, because it is set by an engineer to balance the system.
4. Turn the boiler off and bleed the air out of the radiators with a bleed key and a cloth.
5. Check the pressure again, because bleeding will have dropped it, and bring it back to 1 to 1.5 bar.
6. Turn the boiler back on and press reset once. Give it a few minutes to run through its cycle.
That is the full list, and it is worth doing properly, because low pressure and trapped air are the most common triggers for L3. Everything past it is engineer work: the pump and its speed setting, thermistor testing, flushing a sludged system, or a blocked plate heat exchanger. Do not open the boiler casing. Ideal's own guidance stops here too.
When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer
Call an engineer once you have topped up the pressure, bled the radiators, checked the valves and reset once, and L3 has still come back. The cause is then almost certainly mechanical. An engineer will check the pump is turning at the right speed, resistance test the thermistors against Ideal's published values, confirm the sensors sit on the correct pipes, and judge how sludged the water is. It is illegal for anyone who is not Gas Safe registered to work on the gas side of a boiler.
On price, the honest answer is a range. A pump or a thermistor is a moderate repair, a part plus an hour or two of labour. A power flush is priced by the size of your system, and a plate heat exchanger is dearer. Ask for a price before the work starts.
