It is almost always crossed pipework, sensors fitted on the wrong pipe, or water not circulating properly. You cannot fix any of that yourself. Reset once, and if F84 returns, book a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Vaillant UK's own consumer fault-code page defines F.84 as "The temperature differences between the flow and return temperature sensors return implausible values". The ecoTEC plus installation and maintenance instructions put it more bluntly, listing the causes as sensors that "have been inverted" and sensors that "have not been correctly fitted".
F.84 does appear on Vaillant's public fault-code page at vaillant.co.uk/service/boiler-fault-codes/, so you can read the manufacturer's own wording for yourself. Vaillant writes the code with a dot as F.84; most people type F84 into a search box. They are the same code.
In everyday terms, your boiler has one sensor on the pipe carrying hot water out to the radiators, and one on the pipe bringing it back. It compares the two to work out how hard it is working. When those two readings cannot both be true, the boiler stops rather than fire blind.

Why is my Vaillant boiler showing F84?
F84 is a comparison fault, not a single broken part. The boiler is not saying "this sensor has failed", it is saying "these two numbers cannot both be right". That is why the cause is so often something about how the boiler was fitted rather than something that has worn out.
Vaillant's public page names three causes: crossed flow and return pipework, a circulation fault involving the pump, a valve or a blockage, and flow and return temperature sensors incorrectly fitted or on the wrong pipe. The installer manual adds a fourth, sensors that have been inverted. Vaillant does not say which of them is most common.
Beyond those, a failed sensor, a loose or corroded sensor plug, a damaged cable, a circuit board misreading healthy sensors, or system pressure that has dropped too low can all produce readings the boiler cannot reconcile.

Can I fix a Vaillant F84 myself?
No, and it is worth being straight with you about that rather than padding this section out. Every real cause of F84 sits behind the casing or in the pipework, and both are Gas Safe territory. There is no filter to clean, no button sequence, no lever to move.
What you can usefully do is gather information, so the engineer arrives knowing what they are walking into. Work through these in order, then stop.
1. Check your room thermostat is switched on, set above the current room temperature and calling for heat, and that its batteries are not flat.
2. Read the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler with the heating off and the system cold. Vaillant systems normally sit around 1 to 1.5 bar. Write the reading down to tell your engineer.
3. Look over the boiler and any visible pipework for obvious external damage, drips or staining. Do not remove or open the boiler casing for any reason.
4. Check whether your other gas appliances and other electrical items still work, so you can tell your engineer whether it is the boiler alone or your gas or power supply.
5. Reset the boiler once, following the reset instructions in your own Vaillant user manual. Vaillant's advice is: "Often resetting your boiler can resolve a fault or temporarily get your boiler working again. Find your user manual which will help you to reset your boiler." If F84 comes straight back, stop and book a Gas Safe registered engineer.
That is the stop point, and here is the reason for it. Resetting does not change a crossed pipe, an inverted sensor, a seized pump or a corroded plug. If F84 returns, the fault is still there and the boiler is simply locking out again. Repeated resetting is not a fix, and the boiler will keep locking out until the underlying fault is corrected.
Everything past this line needs an engineer: identifying which pipe is flow and which is return and correcting crossed pipework, checking the sensors are on the correct pipes, testing the thermistors and the cable harness, reseating or replacing sensor plugs and the circuit-board multi-plug, replacing a failed sensor, diagnosing a failed pump or seized valve, power flushing or chemically cleaning a sludged system, testing or replacing the circuit board, and tracing any leak behind repeated pressure loss.
Do not top the system up to try to clear F84. Note the gauge reading and give it to your engineer, because pressure that keeps falling means a leak that needs tracing.
While you wait, please do not heat rooms with a gas hob, a gas oven or an unflued portable gas heater. They can produce carbon monoxide indoors. Use electric heating and extra layers, and check on anyone elderly or very young in the house.
Have I got F84, F83 or F85?
These three are easy to mix up because they all involve the same two sensors, but they say different things. F.84 is about a difference that cannot be true. Vaillant's public page defines it as "The temperature differences between the flow and return temperature sensors return implausible values".
F.83 is about heat that never turns up. Vaillant words it as "When the burner starts, little or no temperature increase is registered at the flow or return temperature sensor", and lists its causes as system pressure too low, a circulation fault involving the pump, a valve or a blockage, or a flow or return sensor fault. So F83 is no temperature rise at all; F84 is a difference between the two readings that cannot be true.
F.85 is the closest of the lot, and names the mistake outright. The ecoTEC plus installation manual defines it as "Flow and return temperature sensors incorrectly fitted", caused by sensors that "have been fitted to the same pipe/wrong pipe". Worth knowing: F.85 appears in the installer manual but not on Vaillant's public consumer page, which jumps from F.84 straight to F.88. If you have F.85 on your display and found nothing on Vaillant's website, you are not going mad.
F.88 is the next code on that public list, and it is unrelated to your sensors: "The electrical connection to the gas valve has been interrupted." Vaillant's own advice on it is blunt: "Don't try to solve it yourself as opening the boiler casing can be dangerous."
F.75 is not adjacent by number, but people with a circulation problem often end up comparing it with F84. It is a pump or water pressure sensor fault.
When should you call a Gas Safe registered engineer?
As soon as F84 comes back after that single reset. There is nothing safe left for you to try. When you book, give them three things: the code, the pressure-gauge reading you wrote down, and whether the boiler has recently been installed, serviced or worked on. That last detail helps the engineer, because installation errors are among the causes Vaillant names.
A typical F84 visit runs roughly in this order. The engineer confirms which pipe is flow and which is return, and corrects the pipework if it has been crossed. They check the flow and return sensors are on the correct pipes, and swap them back if they have been inverted. They test each sensor with a multimeter against Vaillant's resistance figures, in the region of 12k ohms at 20C, and check the cable harness for continuity. They reseat or replace the sensor plugs and the multi-plug on the circuit board.
