Wireless thermostat not working? Start with these four causes

Manufacturers' troubleshooting tables point at four things when a wireless boiler thermostat stops working: flat batteries, a lost radio link to the receiver at the boiler, no power reaching that receiver, or a programmer in an off period. Batteries head every list, so start there. Cover is built for future breakdowns, so a fault showing today needs a one-off repair instead.

How a wireless thermostat is put together

A wireless heating control is two devices, not one: the thermostat you turn in the room, and a receiver wired to the boiler. Resideo, which publishes the Honeywell Home T3R user guide, says the thermostat “communicates wirelessly to the Receiver Box which is wired to the boiler”.

The link is radio, not your home Wi-Fi. Worcester Bosch gives the Comfort+ II RF transmission frequency as 868.00 MHz, so a thermostat can look dead while your broadband is fine. When the heating will not come on, the fault sits in the thermostat, the radio link, or the receiver and boiler behind it.

The five checks to make first

Run through these before you book anyone. They are all things the manufacturers tell users to do themselves.

  • Change the batteries, using the exact type the manual specifies.
  • Set the target well above the room temperature. Resideo's troubleshooting list asks you to confirm that first.
  • Read the signal symbol and the receiver light. They tell you whether the radio link is alive.
  • Check the receiver has power. On a Honeywell Home T3R, pressing its button should switch the boiler on and light it green.
  • Give it a moment. Worcester Bosch says to allow up to a minute after power up for the units to communicate.

Cause one: flat batteries

Every manufacturer puts this first, and the warning comes late. On the Honeywell Home T3R the battery icon is hidden during normal use, appearing only when power has dropped to roughly 10 per cent.

Worcester Bosch adds a deadline. On the Comfort I RF the battery condition indicator appears when roughly two months of life is left, and the batteries then need replacing within 60 days “or the programmed settings will be lost”. The Comfort+ II RF manual repeats that point, so a thermostat that has forgotten its schedule points the same way.

Use the type the manual names. Resideo specifies 2 new 1.5V LR6 AA alkaline batteries for the T3R, lasting approximately 2 years. Worcester Bosch's Comfort I RF room thermostat takes AAA 1.5V alkaline, the Comfort+ II RF LR6/AA 1.5V alkaline. A blank screen points here too: Worcester Bosch's listed action is to replace the batteries and clean the contacts.

If new batteries have not fixed it, ask whether the units can still hear each other. On the Honeywell Home T3R a steady signal symbol and a solid green receiver LED mean the link is good. When the signal is lost, the symbol flashes, the receiver LED flashes red, and Resideo's instruction is to move the thermostat elsewhere to restore communication.

Worcester Bosch uses fault codes instead, and the table below splits the three that matter, because A21, A22 and A28 do not share a remedy.

Signal strength can be read as a number. Worcester Bosch's Comfort+ II RF instructions show reception on a 0 to 10 scale and warn: “Do not display the signal strength for too long as this quickly depletes the batteries.” The Comfort I RF's S 2 step is about siting instead: fit batteries and turn the boiler on before mounting the wall plate, to find a location with good RF signal, its fault table pointing to section 6.7 for the signal strength indication.

Pairing itself can be lost, which manufacturers call binding. Resideo says that if the receiver has power but the thermostat symbol still flashes, no binding data is stored, so follow the binding procedure in the installation guide or contact your installer.

Cause three: the receiver, not the thermostat

The receiver is mains powered, so a tripped fuse, a switched-off fused spur or an isolator killed during other work silences the whole system. The thermostat still lights up on its batteries, which is why it gets the blame.

Resideo gives a quick test. If the T3R loses communication or becomes faulty, the boiler can be switched on or off manually using the button on the receiver box, with the LED solid green when it is on. If that fires the boiler, the fault is in the thermostat or the link. If nothing happens, it is the receiver or the boiler.

Resideo also says not to press the small reset pinhole button on the receiver, because it clears the binding data and disrupts the heating system. If someone has pressed it, the system needs re-binding.

Cause four: it is working, and you are in an off period

Plenty of thermostats reported as broken are doing what they were told. Worcester Bosch spells it out for the Comfort I RF: a new temperature has no effect while the Programmer/Receiver is in an OFF time period, but is stored for the next ON period.

Two normal behaviours also look like faults. Resideo's T3 and T3R troubleshooting says the boiler cycles on and off as it controls the temperature, and that the heating symbol sometimes cycles off with it, so a symbol that comes and goes is normal. Worcester Bosch allows up to six minutes between the boiler firing and the burner symbol appearing.

What you can safely do yourself, and where the line sits

Gas Safe Register's factsheet on who can legally work on a gas appliance is the clearest guide. It says you can perform the tasks set out in the manufacturer's user instructions that are intended for the user, and that this is not a breach of the law. Batteries, repositioning, re-pairing and the receiver's override button all sit there.

The line is the boiler casing. Gas Safe Register warns that a case held on by a number of screws is normally a functional case, which nobody outside the register should remove, and that anyone working on gas appliances as part of their business must be registered. Wiring a receiver into the boiler is an engineer's job.

One point overrides all of it. A boiler is a gas appliance, so if you smell gas or are worried about gas safety, stop troubleshooting. Turn off the gas supply, do not touch any electrical switches, do not smoke, put out all naked flames, open the doors and windows, and contact the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999.

Why is my wireless thermostat not working?

How do I know if the thermostat has lost its signal?

My boiler shows A21. Is that the same as A22?

No, and the fix differs. Worcester Bosch lists A21 as code 1001, “No RF signal”, remedied by checking signal strength and repositioning for better reception. A22 is code 1002, “No RF signal or pairing fault”, and its remedy is to repeat the pairing procedure. A21 also shows at switch on until the units link up, so allow a minute after a power cut.

The thermostat is on but the heating still will not come on. Why?

Check the timer first. Worcester Bosch states that on a Comfort I RF a new temperature has no effect while the Programmer/Receiver is in an off time period, though it is stored for the next on period. Also set the target higher than the room temperature, the first thing Resideo's troubleshooting table asks you to confirm.

Thermostat sorted, boiler still not right?
