What does the Alpha E02 fault code mean?
The Alpha E02 fault code means an overheat boiler lockout. The boiler has sensed the water in the primary circuit getting too hot, so it has shut down and locked out to protect the heat exchanger. It nearly always means heat is not being carried away from the heat exchanger fast enough, so the usual culprit is circulation rather than the burner.
You may see the code written more than one way. The display shows E02, and plenty of people type it as E2 or 02 when they search. If that is what you searched for, you are in the right place, because it is the same overheat lockout. E02 is not the low pressure code on an Alpha, and it is not a flame sensing fault, whatever some third party lists say.

Why does E02 appear on an Alpha boiler?
E02 is almost always a circulation problem rather than a burner problem. The likely causes are a pump fault or restricted flow, a blocked heat exchanger, air trapped in the system, and radiator or isolation valves that are closed or stuck.
Circulation is the thread running through all of them. The burner puts a fixed amount of heat into a small volume of water and relies on that water moving away quickly. A pump that is seized, airlocked or turning too slowly leaves it sitting there long enough to overheat. Sludge and limescale narrow the waterways and do the same. Air trapped at the top of the heat exchanger creates a hot spot while the rest of the system still feels lukewarm.
It is worth knowing which nearby Alpha codes mean something else, so you do not chase the wrong fault. E10 is low system water pressure. E03 points to a flue blockage or an overheat in the flue system. E27 is insufficient primary flow, which also points at a blockage or the pump. E25 is an overheat lockout caused by air or restricted circulation.

What you can safely check yourself
Four checks are worth making before you book anyone, and all four are done with the boiler casing shut.
1. Check the system pressure while the system is cold. The gauge should sit at around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. E02 is not a low pressure fault, that is E10 on an Alpha, but a badly filled system circulates poorly, so it is worth ruling out first.
2. Check the valves. Every radiator valve should be open, and so should the flow and return isolation valves under the boiler. Bleed any radiator that is cold at the top and warm at the bottom, and look for visible leaks. Leave the flue alone: a flue blockage shows as E03 on an Alpha rather than E02, and the flue terminal is not a homeowner job.
3. Check your controls. Make sure the room thermostat and the programmer are switched on and calling for heat, so you are not chasing a boiler fault that is really a control setting.
4. Press RESET once. Check your own boiler's user guide for where the reset button is, press it once, and stop there. If E02 comes back, book a Gas Safe registered engineer instead of pressing it again.
Do not stand there resetting it. An overheat lockout is a safety lockout, and each reset lets the boiler fire again into a circuit that is already too hot, without doing anything about the reason it overheated in the first place.
When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer
If E02 returns after a single reset, book a Gas Safe registered engineer. What is left sits behind the casing: diagnosing or replacing the pump, checking its wiring, testing the overheat protection components, purging air from the primary heat exchanger, flushing or descaling a blocked one, and checking the flow and return sensors. These are gas appliances, so work inside them is Gas Safe registered work by law.
Be ready for more than a part swap. An overheat lockout usually points at the circulation as a whole rather than one failed component, so a sludged system may need flushing before a new part stands a chance.
