How much does a boiler service cost in the UK?

Manufacturers publish real figures. Vaillant says a boiler service can range from £70 to £160, and Worcester Bosch lists in-guarantee services from £184 including VAT, both as published in August 2026. Where you live, how you book and whether parts are needed all move the price. On a gas boiler a service is a yearly job for a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an oil boiler needs an OFTEC registered technician.

What a boiler service costs, and who publishes a real price

There is no single national price for a boiler service. Vaillant says the cost varies with how you book and where you live, and Baxi says it varies with age, product type and whether the boiler needs parts. What you can check yourself are the figures manufacturers publish on their own websites, quoted here as published in August 2026. Vaillant's advice page says “A boiler service cost can vary depending if you book a service through us online, contact your installer directly or where you live”, and puts the range at “£70-£160”.

Worcester Bosch publishes a starting price instead of a range. Its guarantee service page states that “Boiler Services under guarantee start from £184 Inc. VAT.” That is for a boiler still inside its Worcester Bosch guarantee, booked through Worcester Bosch rather than a local firm.

Baxi publishes no boiler service price at all. Its guidance says “A boiler service varies according to age, product type, and whether the boiler needs parts”, and asks you to contact its customer service team for a figure.

So the honest answer is a range, not a number. Two identical boilers on the same street can be quoted differently because of who does the work, whether the boiler is still in guarantee, and what the engineer finds once the case comes off.

The published facts, in one place

Every figure below comes from a manufacturer's own site or from the Health and Safety Executive. The manufacturer prices are as published in August 2026, and manufacturers do change them.

  • Vaillant gives a boiler service range of £70 to £160 on its own advice pages.
  • Worcester Bosch lists in-guarantee boiler services from £184 including VAT.
  • Baxi publishes no service price: it varies according to age, product type, and whether the boiler needs parts.
  • Baxi says that on average a boiler service could take between 40 and 60 minutes.
  • HSE strongly advises that all gas appliances, flues and pipework should be installed, regularly maintained and serviced at least annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • A service and a gas safety check are different jobs, and HSE says neither can be assumed to do the work of the other.

What you actually get for the money

A service is not a quick look and a sticker. Worcester Bosch sets out what its engineers do: “A boiler service typically involves: A visual inspection of the flue, CO2 readings on gas valve are checked, Fan pressure across the heat cell is tested, Heat exchanger is cleaned (if required), Heating and water readings are checked and recorded.”

Vaillant describes a similar sweep, with a checklist covering the flue system, the boiler flame, the burner, the heat exchanger, the spark electrode, the case seal, water-level control, safety valves and the expansion vessel, plus cleaning parts of the boiler if necessary.

Baxi adds a system check. It says that during the annual service your heating engineer should check that the water in your heating system is clean and that sludge is not present, and clean the magnetic filter.

None of it takes long. Baxi's figure is that on average a service could take between 40 and 60 minutes, running longer where substantial work is needed. A price far below the published ranges, for a ten-minute visit, is worth questioning.

A boiler service is not a gas safety check

This is the most expensive misunderstanding in the subject, and HSE puts it plainly: “You should not assume that an annual service inspection includes the points required by a safety check; neither should you assume that carrying out an annual gas safety check will be sufficient to provide effective maintenance.”

The two jobs overlap, but neither replaces the other. HSE describes effective maintenance as including, as a minimum, “examination of the physical condition and safe functioning of appliance(s), installation pipework, ventilation and any flue for deterioration”.

If you rent your home out, the check is not optional. Landlords must arrange an annual gas safety check. HSE explains you can have it carried out up to two months before the deadline while keeping the original deadline date, that a copy of the record goes to each existing tenant within 28 days, and that you keep the record for two years. Our CP12 guide covers what it shows.

A word on safety before any of the servicing detail. Gas you can smell is an emergency, not a maintenance question. Get everyone out into fresh air, leave the doors and windows open behind you, keep away from light switches, plugs, cigarettes and naked flames, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside.

Baxi annual service: what Baxi actually asks for

Baxi's position on frequency is short: “We recommend your boiler is serviced at least annually to ensure it is in optimum condition and to keep your warranty valid.” The warranty half of that sentence is the part that costs money if you ignore it.

Baxi asks for three things to keep a warranty in force. It must be registered within 30 days of installation. The installer must complete the Benchmark checklist, the documented evidence that it was installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer in line with the manufacturer's instructions. And you must arrange an annual service.

There is a fourth condition on one range. Baxi says that if you have a Baxi 800 installed, the magnetic filter supplied with the boiler must be fitted and maintained for the length of the boiler warranty for the 10-year warranty to remain valid. On that model, the filter clean is a warranty condition, not housekeeping.

Baxi routes its own servicing through its engineers and a partner: “Our boiler services are carried out by expert engineers from Baxi and our partners at Domestic and General.” If you would rather book the service elsewhere, read your own warranty document first and check what it says about who may carry the work out.

Baxi is not unusual. Worcester Bosch states that “Yearly servicing is a condition of our manufacturers guarantee and must be completed each year to keep your guarantee valid”. A missed service can cost far more than the service would have.

Cost guides, and why the numbers never quite agree

Search for a price and you land on a trade directory cost guide. Guides like that are a fair sanity check on a quote you have already been given, but they are averages rather than a price anyone is offering you.

Every price on this page comes from Vaillant, Worcester Bosch or Baxi, so you can check each one at source. Use a cost guide to spot an outlier, then get two written quotes for your boiler at your address and compare what each includes.

Three questions separate a good quote from a cheap one. Does it include a written record of the checks and readings? Is it labour only, and how would worn parts be charged? And is the engineer on the Gas Safe Register for the work being done?

If the annual bill is the problem rather than the price, our Boiler & Central Heating Cover spreads it across the year and includes an annual service on one boiler at the property. Two conditions come with that service: a £95 call-out fee applies if you request it inside your first 30 days, and if you pay monthly we can carry it out after six months of payments.

Boiler service cost FAQs

How much does a boiler service cost in the UK?

There is no single national price. Vaillant's advice page gives a range of £70 to £160 and says the cost varies with how you book and where you live. Worcester Bosch prices its in-guarantee service separately, from £184 including VAT. Baxi publishes no figure, because the price varies according to age, product type and whether the boiler needs parts.

Why do boiler service quotes vary so much?

Four things move independently: who does the work, where you live, whether the boiler is still inside its manufacturer guarantee, and whether parts are needed. Vaillant names the booking route and your location. Baxi names age, product type and parts. Get two quotes in writing and compare what each includes.

How much is a Baxi annual service?

Baxi does not publish a price. Its guidance says a boiler service varies according to age, product type, and whether the boiler needs parts, and asks you to contact its customer service team. Baxi's own services are carried out by its engineers and its partner Domestic and General. If you want to book elsewhere, check your warranty document first for what it says about who may carry out the service.

Do I have to have a boiler service every year to keep my warranty?

For most manufacturers, yes. Baxi recommends the boiler is serviced at least annually to keep your warranty valid, alongside registering within 30 days of installation and a completed Benchmark checklist. Worcester Bosch states that yearly servicing is a condition of its manufacturers guarantee. On a Baxi 800 the supplied magnetic filter must also be fitted and maintained for the length of the warranty for the 10-year warranty to remain valid.

Is a boiler service the same as a gas safety check?

No. HSE says you should not assume an annual service inspection includes the points required by a safety check, and equally should not assume an annual gas safety check provides effective maintenance. A landlord needs the safety check by law. A homeowner wanting the boiler to keep working needs the service. Many engineers do both in one visit, so ask which you are buying.

How long should a boiler service take?

Baxi says that on average a boiler service could take between 40 and 60 minutes, depending on the boiler's age and servicing history, and longer if substantial work is needed. Worcester Bosch describes a visual inspection of the flue, CO2 readings on the gas valve, a fan pressure test, cleaning the heat exchanger if required, and recording heating and water readings.

Who is allowed to service my gas boiler?

HSE is explicit that anyone employed to work on gas appliances in domestic premises must be a Gas Safe registered engineer and competent in that area of gas work. Worcester Bosch adds that an oil boiler needs an OFTEC registered technician. You can check an engineer's registration, and the work they are qualified for, on the Gas Safe Register before they start.

Spread the cost of looking after your boiler

Boiler & Central Heating Cover includes an annual service on one boiler at the property, and repairs come with parts and labour up to your cover limit: £500 in a 12-month period for a boiler under 7 years old, or £200 for one over 7. The annual service carries a timing rule worth knowing before you sign. If you pay monthly, we can carry that service out after six months of payments; if you pay annually, you can request it once the first 30 days have passed. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies during your first 30 days, on issues the plan does not cover, on no-access visits, and on any annual service you ask for inside that first 30 days. Cover itself still runs through those 30 days. For breakdowns we aim to get an engineer out to you within two working days, and cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00. The first service you use starts a 12-month agreement period, and leaving before it ends costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance. Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance, from UK Boiler Company Ltd, trading since 2014.
