Ideal F3 fault code: fan fault explained
F3, also written F03 and shown on the small two-character display as an alternating F and 3, means the boiler cannot confirm its fan is running properly, so it locks out. Here is what it means, what you can safely check, and when it needs a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What does the Ideal F3 fault code mean?
The Ideal F3 fault code means a fan fault. The boiler's control board, the PCB, is not seeing the combustion fan turning at the speed it expects, so it locks out instead of firing. If you searched for F03 with a padded zero, or for just the number 3 shown on an Ideal display, you are in the right place: Ideal writes the code as F3, and it is the same fault either way.
Ideal publishes this code rather than hiding it, so you do not need to pay a third party for the meaning. Ideal's own fault-code information lists F3 as a fan fault, and the action it gives is to reset the boiler, and if that does not fix the problem, to contact Ideal quoting the error code, because it will need a visit from an engineer. The fan drives the products of combustion out through the flue. If the PCB cannot prove it is turning at the right speed, the burner does not light. F3 is the boiler protecting itself and the household, not a nuisance code to push through, so do not try to keep the boiler running while F3 is showing, and make sure a working carbon monoxide alarm is fitted near the boiler.
Two things trip people up. Newer Ideal boilers with the larger display spell faults out in words rather than showing a two-character code, in the way the Logic Max Combi2 and Vogue Max Combi manuals write their fault names out in full, so on those models the same fault can read simply as a fan fault. And an alternating L and a digit is a different family of codes: L1, for instance, is a flow-temperature overheat or no water flow lockout, which is a different fault altogether. Check whether the first character is an F or an L before you read any further.

Why does the Ideal F3 fault code appear?
F3 points at three things: the combustion fan itself, the wiring between the fan and the control board, and the board. An engineer works through them in that order, first checking that the fan wiring is secure, undamaged and has continuity, then checking whether the control board is delivering mains power to the fan. No power at the fan points at the board; power present with no fan points at the fan. Both of those checks sit inside a sealed gas appliance and are Gas Safe registered engineer work, not homeowner work.
Something worth being careful about either way: several other boiler sites list a blocked flue as a cause of F3. F3 reports the fan, its wiring and the control board rather than a blockage, and Ideal sets out flue and condensate blockage checks under other codes such as F2, flame loss. That is not a reason for you to rule the flue out. An engineer will still inspect the flue and fan assembly on site, because the two sit together and a genuinely blocked flue is a safety matter.

What you can safely check yourself
Ideal's published advice for its fault codes allows one thing: restart the boiler once to see whether that clears it, and if it still fails to operate, contact Ideal if the appliance is under warranty, or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Work through this short list, then stop.
1. Note the exact code before you touch anything, including whether the first character is an F or an L.
2. Restart the boiler once, following the reset steps in your Ideal manual. Once only.
3. Listen for whether the fan spins up during that attempt. That is useful information for the engineer, not a repair.
4. Read the pressure gauge and note what it says. Ideal gives 1 to 1.5 bar as normal, though low pressure shows as F1, not F3.
5. If you can see the outside flue terminal from the ground, note anything obvious such as a nest or debris. Do not climb, do not use ladders, and never poke, clear or touch a flue terminal. If you cannot see it from the ground, leave it for the engineer.
Then stop. Do not reset a second time: repeated resets add a further lockout on top of the original fault, shown as L5 on many Ideal boilers and as LC on newer Logic Max Heat models, which forces a full power off and on and buries the original F3. Do not keep the boiler running with a fan fault showing while you wait, and make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm fitted near the boiler. And never take the casing off: everything past that single restart sits inside a sealed gas appliance and involves mains electrical testing.
When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer
Call one as soon as F3 returns after a single restart. No homeowner-level step is left, because the next checks are a continuity test on the fan wiring and a mains-voltage check at the board, ending at either a new fan or a new control board. Both are jobs for a Gas Safe registered engineer with the case open.
Call sooner if the boiler is making an unusual noise, if you can see scorching or sooting around the case, or if anything smells wrong.
