Vaillant F01 fault code: what the return sensor fault means
Your boiler has stopped because it cannot read its return temperature sensor. Here is what F01 means, why Vaillant's own website writes it as F.1, the checks that are safe to make yourself, and the point where you need to stop and call an engineer.
What does the Vaillant F01 fault code mean?
Vaillant F01 means the boiler has lost the signal from its return temperature sensor, the small probe that measures how hot the water is coming back from your radiators. Without that reading the control board stops the boiler rather than fire the burner blind. You cannot fix this one yourself. It needs a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Vaillant's own installation and maintenance instructions for the ecoTEC plus (document 0020244997_07, page 60) print the code as “F.01 Return temperature sensor interruption”, and tell the engineer to “Check: Return temperature sensor, plug, cable harness, PCB.” That is an installer and servicing manual, not a consumer leaflet, which is why the wording is blunt.
There is a good reason you may have drawn a blank on Vaillant's website. The code does not appear on Vaillant's public fault-code page at vaillant.co.uk/service/boiler-fault-codes/ in the form your boiler shows it. When we checked that page it listed 27 codes and not one of them was written F.01. The same fault is there under a different label, F.1, described as “The return temperature sensor has been interrupted”. Your screen drops nothing; Vaillant's consumer page drops the zero.
So the fault is real, it is documented by Vaillant, and it sits inside the boiler. It is not caused by anything your radiators, thermostat or heating system have done, and it is not a low-pressure fault, even though low pressure is an easy thing to check first.

- Models affected: ecoTEC plus (VU and VUW ..6/5-5) and ecoFIT pure combi, system and open vent ranges. Vaillant reuses the same fault-code table across its current gas boiler range, so ecoTEC pro, ecoTEC exclusive and ecoFIT sustain use it too. Vaillant prints a warning above that table that some codes may not appear on every product, so check the manual for your own boiler.
- Notation trap: your display says F.01, Vaillant's public code list says F.1. Same fault, two spellings, which is why searching the manufacturer's own site for F01 returns nothing.
Why does my Vaillant boiler show F01?
Every cause of F01 is an electrical break somewhere between the return sensor and the control board. Vaillant's ecoFIT pure manual lists them plainly: the “NTC plug not plugged in or has come loose, multiple plug on the PCB not plugged in correctly, interruption in cable harness, NTC sensor defective”. NTC is simply the type of probe used; think of it as the sensor itself.
That gives you a short list of suspects, and the way the fault behaves tells you a lot about which one it is. A fault that is there from the second you switch the power on behaves differently from one that comes and goes as the boiler heats up.
Here is how each cause tends to show itself, so you can tell the engineer something useful when you book.
Which F01 cause matches what you are seeing?

Can I fix a Vaillant F01 myself?
No, and it would be unfair to pretend otherwise. The sensor, its plug and its wiring are all behind the casing, and taking a boiler casing off is not a homeowner job. So this list is short on purpose. It is not a fix; it is the handful of things worth doing before you pick up the phone, and it will save you time on the visit.
1. Read the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler and write the figure down. F01 is not a pressure fault, but the reading is the first thing an engineer will ask you for.
2. Check your room thermostat is switched on, calling for heat and has working batteries. This is not what causes F01, but it lets the engineer rule out a controls problem before travelling to you.
3. Check whether other gas appliances, such as a hob or gas fire, and other electrical items around the house are working normally. That confirms your gas and power supplies are on.
4. Look over the outside of the boiler and the pipes below it for obvious drips, water marks or staining. Look only. Do not remove the casing.
5. Reset the boiler once, following the reset instructions in your Vaillant user manual. Reset only once.
That is the stop point, and here is the reason for it. If F01 comes straight back, the sensor or its wiring is genuinely broken, and pressing reset again does not repair a broken wire. It just relights a boiler that is going to lock out again straight away. Vaillant's own consumer page points you to your user manual to reset the boiler. Beyond that reset, a sensor fault is engineer work.
When the engineer arrives, the work is theirs alone: removing the casing, testing the return sensor's resistance with a multimeter, reseating or replacing the sensor plug and the multiple plug on the control board, continuity-testing or replacing the cable harness, fitting a new return temperature sensor, or replacing the control board. Anything inside the sealed combustion chamber or on the gas valve is also engineer-only.
One safety note that has nothing to do with F01 itself. If you ever smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, do not wait for a booking. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away.
Is my code F01, F.1, F.00 or F.11?
This is the part worth getting right, because four codes look almost identical and only one of them is yours. F.01 and F.1 are the same fault written two different ways: your boiler screen shows F.01, and Vaillant's public fault-code page lists it as F.1, “The return temperature sensor has been interrupted”. If you searched Vaillant's site for F01 and found nothing, that is why, and it does not mean your code is made up.
F.00 is the same type of failure on the other sensor. That one measures the water leaving the boiler, rather than the water coming back. A single mis-read digit turns F.01 into F.00, so it is worth looking at the display twice.
F.11 is your sensor again, failing the opposite way. Vaillant lists F.01 as a return temperature sensor interruption, which is an open circuit, and F.11 as a return temperature sensor short circuit. Same probe, different electrical fault. F.10 is the short-circuit version of F.00, on the flow sensor.
F.02 is a different sensor altogether: an interruption on the hot water outlet sensor, or in some manuals the cylinder charging sensor, which Vaillant notes is shown only in combination with F.91.
One last check. All of these are Vaillant codes. If your boiler is another make, a code that looks the same can mean something completely different on that brand, so read it off your own manufacturer's list rather than assuming it carries across.
When should I call a Gas Safe registered engineer?
Call one as soon as F01 comes back after your single reset. There is no waiting-and-seeing on this code, because a boiler that cannot read its return temperature will keep locking out, and in cold weather that means no heating and no hot water until someone opens it up.
Worth knowing what you are booking. Vaillant's manual tells the engineer to check the return temperature sensor, its plug, the cable harness and the control board, so the visit is a hunt for one electrical connection. One outcome is worth understanding before you decide how to pay for it. If the fault turns out to be the control board itself, a Fixed Price Repair excludes any work on the boiler's PCB, and under a cover plan the failure of the PCB means the boiler is declared beyond economic repair, so you would receive a capped contribution towards a replacement rather than a repair.
That is the decision you are really making, and the two routes are not interchangeable. A one-off repair is a job you pay for once rather than a monthly payment. It can take more than one visit, a diagnosis call-out allocates 30 minutes on site, and if parts or extra labour are needed the engineer quotes for those separately. One-off works do not carry a workmanship guarantee. A cover plan is different: it is protection against future breakdowns, not a way to pay for a fault your boiler already has. The terms define a defect as a fault in existence before the plan starts, and exclude works to repair a defect we have identified. Can I keep using the hot water while I wait for an engineer?
Usually not. F01 is a lockout, so the burner will not fire at all, which means no heating and no hot water from the boiler until it is repaired. Do not attempt to bypass or override the boiler yourself. While you wait, use only heaters designed for indoor use, and never a gas or paraffin heater indoors.
