Vaillant F49 fault code (F.049): what it means and what to do now
F49 is a fault on the eBUS, the two-wire link between your boiler and its Vaillant control. It is wiring, not gas. Here is the manufacturer's own wording, the one reset that is safe to try, and what to expect once you book an engineer.
What does the Vaillant F49 fault code mean?
Vaillant F49 means the boiler has lost proper communication on its eBUS: the two-wire link between the boiler and its Vaillant control, such as a smart thermostat. It has found a short circuit, reversed polarity, or too many devices on that line. You cannot fix it yourself. Reset once, and if it returns, book a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Vaillant's own installation and maintenance instructions for the current ecoTEC plus (document 0020308118_05, dated 31 May 2023) print the code as F.049 and describe it as "The eBUS has short-circuited or two active eBUS sources have inverted polarity." The older ecoTEC plus installation and maintenance instructions (document 0020244997_07) title the same fault "F.49 Fault: eBUS" and give the cause as "Undervoltage on the eBUS". Same fault, two generations of wording.
You will not find F.49 on Vaillant's public fault-code page at vaillant.co.uk/service/boiler-fault-codes/. When we read that page on 14 August 2026 it listed a couple of dozen codes, F.52 and F.57 among them, but F.49 and F.42 were not there. F.49 is documented only in Vaillant's installer and servicing manuals. If you searched the maker's own site and came away with nothing, that is why, and not because the code is made up.
The useful thing to take from that wording is what F49 is not. It is not low pressure, not a blocked condensate pipe, not ignition and not the flame. Nothing about it is a gas fault. The boiler has detected a fault on the two wires that carry power and data to your control, so it stops rather than run on a link it cannot rely on. It still needs a Gas Safe registered engineer, because the eBUS terminals and the circuit board sit inside a gas appliance's casing, so opening that casing is Gas Safe work even though the fault itself is electrical.

- Cover will not pay for the F49 showing now: a fault your boiler is already showing counts as pre-existing. Smart Plan boiler and central heating cover is for future breakdowns, with parts and labour up to £500 in a 12-month cover period if the boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 if it is over 7. Anything above the limit you pay yourself, and several common F49 causes are excluded, so check your terms.
- One-off repair appointments run Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, and not on bank holidays. Cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00, and outside those hours you are only seen sooner for a genuine emergency breakdown.
- A £95 cover-plan call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan does not cover, if the engineer cannot get access, and for early annual-service requests. In those first 30 days any works are payable in advance too. Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period from the first time you use a service. There is a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends the moment a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
Why has my Vaillant boiler put up F49?
Because something on the eBUS wiring has changed, broken or been connected the wrong way round. Vaillant's manuals name three underlying causes: a short circuit in the eBUS connection, different polarities at the eBUS connection, and a defective circuit board. The older manual adds overload, meaning too many devices drawing from one eBUS line.
Timing is the best clue you have. If F49 turned up on the day a new thermostat, weather compensator or zone module was fitted, or straight after any rewiring, different polarities at the eBUS connection is one of Vaillant's named causes, so tell the engineer what was fitted and when. If it comes and goes, and is worse in damp or cold weather, water or corrosion at a terminal or an outside junction is a documented cause. If nothing has been touched for years, a damaged cable or a defective circuit board are the remaining documented causes.

Can I fix a Vaillant F49 myself?
No, and it is worth being straight with you about why. Everything that actually clears F49 means measuring voltage at the boiler's circuit board, checking polarity at every connected device or opening the casing. That is engineer work from start to finish. Vaillant's own remedy list for F.049 runs from checking the eBUS connections to replacing the circuit board, and there is no homeowner fix in it beyond a single reset.
What you can do is gather information, which genuinely shortens the visit. Work through these in order.
1. Look at your room thermostat or Vaillant control, for example a VRC, sensoCOMFORT or vSMART wall unit. Note whether the screen is blank, frozen, or showing a connection error, and tell the engineer what you saw.
2. Read the pressure gauge on the boiler and note the figure. F49 is not a pressure fault, but the reading is useful information for the engineer.
3. Look for obvious external damage without opening the boiler casing: a thermostat hanging off the wall, a chewed or trapped cable, or water dripping near the control. Do not remove any cover and do not touch any wiring.
4. Check whether other appliances in the house have power, to rule out a wider electrical problem.
5. Press the reset button once, as your Vaillant user guide describes. If F49 comes straight back, stop and book a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not keep resetting.
Stop at that point. Repeated resetting will not clear a short circuit or a polarity error, and there is nothing further you can safely reach. If you have no heating and the weather is cold, please do check on anyone elderly or unwell in the house.
Is my code really F49, or one of the codes near it?
Fault codes are easy to misread on a small display, and F49 sits between several codes that mean completely different things. On older ecoTEC boilers, the code before F.49 in Vaillant's table is F.42, a coding resistor fault caused by the coding or gas group resistor short circuiting, and the code after it is F.52, a mass flow sensor fault where the sensor is not connected. On the current ecoTEC plus range, F.049 sits between F.47, where the signal from the hot water temperature sensor at the internal cylinder outlet is implausible, and F.57, where combustion regulation and the limp home mode have both failed.
Two more get typed in place of F49 by mistake. F.29 means the ignition following a flame loss during operation was unsuccessful, and the digits transpose very easily. F.90 is Vaillant's other communication fault, but it concerns communication with an actoSTOR or an attached module rather than a short circuit on the eBUS.
Finally, if your display shows F9 with no decimal point, check the badge on the boiler, because you may not have a Vaillant at all. Ideal and Glow-worm both write their codes in that dotless style, and we have a separate page for each of those.
When should I call a Gas Safe registered engineer for F49?
As soon as F49 comes back after one reset. The boiler has detected a fault on the eBUS, and whether that turns out to be the cable, the polarity, the load on the line or the circuit board, none of it clears on its own. If F49 comes and goes, it is still the same fault and still needs an engineer.

They will measure the eBUS terminal voltage at the boiler's circuit board, disconnect the control to work out whether the fault sits in the boiler or in the control, and run continuity and short-circuit tests along the cable. They will check polarity at every connected device, count the connected eBUS devices against the permitted load and split the circuit if there are too many, and inspect or replace terminal blocks, junctions and the cable harness. Replacing the boiler's circuit board or the Vaillant control unit is the last step, not the first.

Cover is modular, so you pick only what you want, and it funds covered repairs, parts and labour, up to £500 in a 12-month cover period if your boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 if it is over 7. Anything above that limit you pay yourself. Not every F49 cause is a covered repair either: the terms exclude repairs to wifi-enabled or internet-based equipment, which takes in a lot of smart controls, along with work caused by newly installed equipment, third-party interference, damage from rust or corrosion, and manufacturer defects. And if the boiler's circuit board or heat exchanger has failed, the terms treat the boiler as beyond economic repair, so instead of a repair you receive a contribution payment set at the lower of the equipment's retail value or your remaining cover limit. Since replacing the circuit board is exactly where Vaillant's own F.049 remedy ends, that is a real possibility on this fault, so check your terms before you assume an F49 repair is covered.

That timing points straight at the wiring. Vaillant's manual for F.049 names different polarities at the eBUS connection as a cause, and two active eBUS sources with inverted polarity as another. A new control, a rewire, or a control moved to a new position can all produce exactly that. Tell the engineer what was fitted and when, because it points them at the connection instead of the boiler.
Will resetting the boiler clear F49?
No. F49 is a wiring fault the boiler has physically detected, and a reset does not repair a short circuit, reversed polarity or an overloaded eBUS line. Reset the boiler once, following your Vaillant user guide, and no more than once.
