Vaillant F29 fault code: meaning, causes and how to fix it
Your Vaillant lit, then lost its flame and couldn't relight, so it shut down to stay safe. Here's what's safe to check yourself and when to call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What does the Vaillant F29 fault code mean?
The Vaillant F29 fault code means your boiler lost its flame while running and then failed to re-ignite, so it has locked out for safety. It is most often caused by an interrupted gas supply or a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather. You can check the gas supply and thaw the pipe; anything else needs a Gas Safe engineer.
Vaillant's own definition of F29 is: "The ignition following a flame loss during operation was unsuccessful." In plain terms, the burner was already alight, the flame went out mid-cycle, and the boiler tried to relight but couldn't confirm a flame, so it stopped rather than let gas keep flowing.
F29 vs F28 — what's the difference?
F29 and F28 are close cousins but not the same. Vaillant defines F28 as "The flame signal was not detected during the ignition phase" — the boiler never manages to light at start-up. F29 is one step further on: it did light, then lost the flame during operation and couldn't get it back. The likely causes and the safe homeowner checks overlap, which is why it's worth reading both.
On its own, F29 is not a gas emergency. The 0800 111 999 National Gas Emergency line is only for when you can smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm is sounding — not for this code. Codes can vary slightly by model, so it's always worth checking F29 against your own boiler's manual.
Key facts
The quick version, before we get into the detail.
- Meaning: the flame was lost during operation and re-ignition failed (Vaillant's official definition).
- DIY-fixable? Partly — gas-supply and frozen-condensate checks only.
- Gas Safe job if: it recurs after one reset, or involves the gas valve, ignition electrode or PCB.
- Most common winter cause: a frozen condensate pipe stopping wastewater draining.
- Smart Plan boiler & central heating cover: parts and labour up to £200 if your boiler is over 7 years old, or up to £500 if it's under 7 — an older boiler's £200 cap may not cover the whole repair, and you'd pay any difference.
- Call-outs are Mon–Fri 08:00–18:00 unless it's a genuine emergency; a £95 call-out fee applies in the cases set out in the plan terms and conditions.
- The plan is a membership: once you use a service, a 12-month agreement period begins, with a 75% charge on the remaining term if you leave early. A 14-day cooling-off period applies, but it ends once a service is used.
Vaillant F29 at a glance
| Code | What it means | Likely cause | Safe fix | Who can do it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F29 | Flame lost during operation; re-ignition failed and the boiler locked out. | Interrupted or low gas supply (including a prepay meter out of credit). | Check other gas appliances work and the meter has credit; reset once. | Homeowner (basic checks), then a Gas Safe registered engineer. |
| F29 | Same fault, cold-weather trigger. | Frozen or blocked condensate pipe stopping wastewater draining. | Thaw the external pipe gently with warm — never boiling — water, then reset once. | Homeowner can thaw the pipe; engineer if it refreezes or won't clear. |
| F29 | Same fault, recurring after a reset. | Flue obstruction, poor earthing, or an ignition/flame-sensing electrode fault. | None — don't open the casing. | Gas Safe registered engineer only. |
| F29 | Same fault, persistent lockout. | Faulty gas valve or control board (PCB). | None. | Gas Safe registered engineer only. |
Why does the F29 code appear?
F29 appears when the flame goes out mid-cycle and the boiler can't relight it — and the two most common reasons are an interrupted gas supply and a frozen condensate pipe. In colder months the frozen pipe tops the list: when the external condensate pipe freezes, wastewater can't drain away, and the boiler shuts down. The rest of the year, a gas supply problem is the more likely trigger.
A gas supply issue can be as simple as a prepay meter that's run out of credit, a gas isolation cock that's been left closed, or low gas pressure reaching the boiler. If your hob and other gas appliances have also stopped working, that points to the supply rather than the boiler itself.
Beyond those, F29 can be caused by a flue obstruction, poor earthing, or a worn ignition or flame-sensing electrode that can't keep the flame established. A faulty gas valve or control board can do it too. Those are all inside the boiler or on the gas side — engineer territory, not homeowner checks.
Can I fix a Vaillant F29 myself?
You can safely try three things: confirm your gas supply is working, thaw a frozen condensate pipe, and reset the boiler once. That's the full extent of it — anything involving the gas valve, the electrodes, the flue or the PCB is a Gas Safe registered engineer's job, and it's illegal for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered to work on the gas side.
Here's the order to work through:
1. Check your gas supply. Do your other gas appliances — the hob, a gas fire — still work? If they don't, it's a supply problem, not the boiler. Make sure the gas isolation cock under the boiler is open, your meter is on, and, if you're on a prepay meter, that it has credit.
2. If it's freezing outside, check the condensate pipe. The white or grey plastic pipe running from the boiler out through an external wall can freeze solid in a cold snap. If it has, thaw it gently (steps below).
3. Reset the boiler once. Follow the reset step in your Vaillant manual and let it run through its ignition sequence. Reset only once — if F29 comes straight back, stop there. Repeated resets don't fix anything and can mask a developing fault. Book a Gas Safe registered engineer instead.
How to thaw a frozen condensate pipe
Thawing a frozen condensate pipe is a genuine homeowner job — as long as the pipe is somewhere you can safely reach. It's the single most common winter fix for F29.
1. Find the pipe. Look for the white or grey plastic pipe that runs from the boiler out through an external wall to a drain.
2. Locate the ice. It usually freezes at the exposed bends, the open end, or any low or outdoor section — that's where to concentrate.
3. Pour warm — not boiling — water along the frozen section. Boiling water can crack the plastic. A hot water bottle or a warm cloth wrapped around the pipe works well too.
4. Once it's thawed, reset the boiler once and check it fires up and stays running.
5. To stop it happening again, lag or insulate the outdoor section of the pipe before the next cold snap.
Never use a naked flame on the pipe, and never pour boiling water over it. If the pipe keeps refreezing or the code returns once it's thawed, that's your cue to call an engineer.
When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer
Call an engineer if F29 returns after one reset, if there's no obvious gas or condensate cause, or if your other gas appliances work fine but the boiler still won't stay lit. Electrodes, the gas valve, the flue and the PCB are all engineer-only — it isn't worth the risk of tackling the gas side yourself. You can check an engineer is registered on the Gas Safe Register before they start.
It's worth diagnosing a repeat F29 promptly — a lingering ignition fault can leave you without heating or hot water, and it rarely fixes itself. A Gas Safe registered engineer can confirm whether it's the gas valve, an electrode, the flue or the PCB.
If you'd rather plan ahead for repair costs, Smart Plan boiler and central heating cover includes parts and labour up to your cover limit. Check the limit before you rely on it: cover is up to £200 if your boiler is over 7 years old, or up to £500 if it's under 7 — and a larger repair can cost more than the cap, so you'd pay the difference. Cover is modular, so you pick only the modules you want. Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance.
Two things worth knowing before you join. Once you use a service, a 12-month agreement period begins, and leaving early means paying 75% of the remaining term; a 14-day cooling-off period applies but ends once a service is used. And a £95 call-out fee applies in the cases set out in the plan's terms and conditions — worth reading so you know when it does and doesn't apply. Our engineers work Mon–Fri 08:00–18:00 unless it's a genuine emergency, and Smart Plan comes from UK Boiler Company Ltd, trading since 2014.

Safe checks before you call anyone out
The only things worth trying yourself with an F29 fault. If none of them clear it, the next step is a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- Check your other gas appliances. If the hob won't light either, it's a gas supply issue, not the boiler.
- Make sure the gas is on — the isolation cock under the boiler is open, the meter is on, and any prepay meter has credit.
- In cold weather, check the white external condensate pipe for ice and thaw it gently with warm — never boiling — water.
- Reset the boiler once, following your Vaillant manual. Don't keep resetting if F29 comes back.
- Never open the casing or touch the electrodes, gas valve or wiring — that's gas work, and it's a Gas Safe registered engineer's job.
- If you ever smell gas or your CO alarm sounds, stop. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, open windows, turn off the gas at the meter, don't touch electrical switches, and leave the house.
Vaillant F29 fault code FAQs
What does F29 mean on a Vaillant boiler?
F29 means your Vaillant boiler lit but then lost its flame during operation and failed to re-ignite, so it locked out for safety. The usual causes are an interrupted gas supply or a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather.
Can I reset a Vaillant F29 fault myself?
You can reset the boiler once after checking the gas supply and thawing any frozen condensate pipe. If F29 comes straight back, stop resetting and book a Gas Safe registered engineer, as repeated resets can mask an underlying fault.
Is a Vaillant F29 fault dangerous?
F29 itself is a safety lockout doing its job — the boiler shuts down rather than run unsafely. It is not dangerous to leave off, but you should not open the boiler casing; any internal gas or electrical work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Why does F29 keep happening in cold weather?
In freezing conditions the external condensate pipe can freeze, stopping wastewater draining and tripping F29. Thawing the pipe with warm water usually clears it; lagging the pipe helps prevent it recurring through winter.
Book an F29 repair, or add ongoing boiler cover
Book a one-off repair and a Gas Safe registered engineer can diagnose it, or add a Smart Plan boiler module so future faults are covered up to your limit. A service plan, not insurance — parts and labour up to £200 for boilers over 7 years old or £500 under 7, with a £95 call-out fee in the cases set out in the plan terms. Once you use a service, a 12-month agreement period begins.
