Vaillant F74 fault code: what it means and who can fix it

F74 is the water pressure sensor sending a signal the boiler cannot believe. It is not on Vaillant's own public fault-code page, so here is what the installer manuals actually say, what is safe for you to check, and when it becomes an engineer's job.

What does the Vaillant F74 fault code mean?

Vaillant F74 means the boiler's control board is reading a signal from the water pressure sensor that is too strong to believe. That is either an electrical fault in the sensor or its wiring, or genuinely excessive water pressure in the heating system. You cannot fix it yourself. Check the pressure gauge, reset once, then book a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Vaillant's own manuals word F.74 in two different ways, and the difference matters. The ecoFIT pure installation and maintenance instructions (document 0020230531_07) call it "F.74 Fault: Electrical problem in the water pressure sensor", with the possible cause "Line to water pressure sensor has a short circuit to 5 V/24 V or internal fault in the water pressure sensor". The ecoTEC plus installation and maintenance instructions (document 0020244997_07) call it "F.74 Fault: Water press. sensor (signal too strong)", with the possible cause "Water pressure too high" and the measure "1. Drain water. 2. Check the water pressure sensor."

F.74 is not on Vaillant's public fault-code page at vaillant.co.uk/service/boiler-fault-codes/. Checked on 14 August 2026, that list ran from F.72 straight to F.75, with no entry for F.73, F.74, F.76 or F.77. The only official definitions come from Vaillant's professional installation and maintenance instructions, which is why searching the maker's own website for F74 comes up empty. Vaillant can of course change that page, so treat the manuals as the definitive source.

The practical upshot of the two wordings is this. On an ecoTEC plus, the reading on your pressure gauge is a genuine clue, because Vaillant's own listed cause is water pressure that is too high. On an ecoFIT pure, the manual treats F.74 as purely electrical, so a normal gauge reading does not rule the fault out. Either way it is engineer-only work on a sealed system.

  • Not on Vaillant's own site: checked on 14 August 2026, the public fault-code page listed F.72 and then F.75, with no entry for F.74, so the code is documented only in the installer and servicing manuals.
  • Easily confused with F.73, which is the same sensor reading too low, and with F.75, which is a pump or water shortage fault and is far more common in the wild than F74.
  • Normal cold pressure on a Vaillant is roughly 1.0 to 1.5 bar. A reading well above 2.5 bar when the system is cold is a real clue worth telling the engineer.
  • One-off repairs: appointments run Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00. A call-out covers the first 30 minutes of engineer labour and fault diagnosis, and we quote you before any parts or extra labour. A one-off repair is a single visit and does not carry a workmanship guarantee.
  • Two exclusions that bite on this fault: a Fixed Price Repair does not cover work on the boiler's PCB or heat exchanger, and it does not cover a fault caused by pressurising the system. On a cover plan, a PCB failure means the boiler is declared beyond economic repair, so you get a contribution towards a replacement rather than a repair.
  • Smart Plan cover is modular, so you pick only the modules you want and cover applies only to those. The boiler and central heating module covers parts and labour up to £500 in a 12-month period if the boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 if it is over 7. You pay anything above the limit yourself.
  • Cover is for future breakdowns, not a fault your boiler is already showing. An F74 on the display today counts as a pre-existing fault, so book a one-off repair for that.
  • A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan does not cover, if the engineer cannot get access, and for early annual-service requests.
  • Cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00. An engineer attends outside those hours only for a genuine emergency breakdown, and whether a fault counts as one is our decision, so a Friday evening fault can wait until Monday.
  • Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period from the first time you use a service. There is a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends the moment a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.

Why has my Vaillant boiler locked out on F74?

Every cause points back at one small component: the water pressure sensor that tells the control board what pressure the sealed heating system is holding. F74 fires when the signal coming back from that sensor is stronger than the board can accept. Either the signal is wrong, or the pressure genuinely is too high.

The documented causes are an internal fault in the sensor itself, a short circuit to the 5 V or 24 V supply in the cable or plug feeding it, a system that has been over-filled through the filling loop, a failed or waterlogged expansion vessel, or a fault on the main circuit board misreading the input.

Can I fix a Vaillant F74 myself?

Honestly, no. The water pressure sensor, its wiring and the expansion vessel are all engineer-only work, and Vaillant's own first measure for F.74 on an ecoTEC plus is to drain water out of a sealed system. None of that is homeowner work.

What you can do is gather the information that makes the engineer's visit shorter, and rule out the one thing that is not a boiler fault at all. Work through these in order.

1. Read the pressure gauge on the front or underside of the boiler and write down what it says while the system is cold. Vaillant's normal cold range is roughly 1.0 to 1.5 bar, and anything above about 2.5 bar is a genuine clue for the engineer.

2. Look at the filling loop and check it is closed and not left connected. Do not open, adjust or dismantle anything else. If you topped the pressure up recently and the gauge is now very high, say so when you book the engineer.

3. Look at the boiler and at the small overflow pipe outside the wall for obvious water or dripping. Do this without opening the boiler casing or removing any panel. Look only: if that pipe is dripping or running, do not touch it and keep children away from it, because what comes out can be scalding hot.

4. Check the room thermostat has working batteries and is calling for heat, so you can rule that out as a separate problem.

5. Reset the boiler once, following the reset instructions in your Vaillant user guide. If F74 comes straight back, stop and book a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not keep resetting.

Stop at that point. Draining water down to reduce system pressure, testing or replacing the water pressure sensor, checking the sensor wiring and plug for a short circuit to the 5 V or 24 V supply, testing or recharging the expansion vessel, and testing or replacing the main circuit board are all engineer-only jobs on a sealed system. Do not try to lower the pressure yourself by bleeding a radiator or opening a drain valve. Draining a sealed system down is the engineer's job.

Repeated resetting will not clear a genuine sensor or over-pressure fault. It just delays the repair, and Vaillant's own measure on an ecoTEC plus is to drain water down and then check the water pressure sensor, which is engineer work.

Is my code F74, F73 or F75?

These three sit next to each other on the display and are easy to mix up. F.74 is genuinely rare compared with F.22, F.28 and F.75, so check the display digit by digit before you act on anything you read, because the three mean different things.

F.73 is the mirror image of F.74. It is the same water pressure sensor, reading too low instead of too high, and it is the code most often confused with F.74. Vaillant's ecoFIT pure manual words it as "Fault: Water pressure sensor not connected or has short-circuited". The ecoTEC plus manual words it as "Fault: Water press. sensor (signal too weak)", with the cause "Water pressure sensor reports that the water pressure is too low".

F.75 is a different component altogether. The ecoTEC plus manual words it as "Fault: Pump/ water shortage", with the cause "Insufficient pressure jump detected when starting the pump". Vaillant's public page words it as "The pressure change is too low when the heat pump is started up". It is far more common in the wild than F.74, and it is on Vaillant's public list, so searchers often land on F.75 pages by mistake.

F.72 is the flow and return temperature sensors. Vaillant's public page words it as "The temperature spread between the flow and return temperature sensor is invalid", while the ecoFIT pure manual words it as "Fault: Deviation in the water pressure sensor/return temperature sensor". F.76 is different again: the ecoFIT pure manual describes it as "The safety cut-out in the primary heat exchanger is defective", which has nothing to do with water pressure.

If your actual problem is low pressure rather than high, the code you want is F.22. Vaillant's public page words it as "F.22 - Low water pressure in the system".

When should I call a Gas Safe registered engineer?

As soon as F74 comes back after a single reset. There is no homeowner fix beyond the checks above, and the code will keep locking the boiler out until the underlying fault is dealt with.

Call sooner, without resetting again, if the gauge is reading well above 2.5 to 3 bar or the pressure relief pipe outside is running. That is a system under more pressure than it should be holding, and it needs draining down properly rather than left to the safety valve.

It is worth having two things ready when you book: what the gauge read while the system was cold, and whether anyone has topped up the pressure or worked on the boiler recently. Tell us either way. It points the engineer straight at the cause and can save a second visit, though a fault caused by the system being over-pressurised falls outside what both the one-off Fixed Price Repair and the cover plan include, so that work would be quoted to you first.

Expect the engineer to test the water pressure sensor and its wiring, check the plug and connections for a short to the 5 V or 24 V supply, drain water down if the system is over-pressurised, and check the expansion vessel. If a new sensor does not clear it, the main circuit board is next. Be aware that PCB work is excluded from a one-off Fixed Price Repair, and on a cover plan a PCB failure means the boiler is declared beyond economic repair.

F.73 is the code most often confused with F.74, and F.75 is the one that is far more common in practice, so check your display carefully before acting.

Does F74 mean my boiler pressure is too high?

It might, and that depends on your model. On the ecoTEC plus range Vaillant gives the cause as water pressure too high, and the first measure as draining water down. On the ecoFIT pure range the same code is described purely as an electrical problem in the sensor, so a normal gauge reading does not rule it out. Read the gauge cold and tell the engineer what it says.
