Vaillant F76 fault code: your boiler's overheat protection has tripped
F76 means the safety device on your boiler's main heat exchanger has operated, and the boiler has shut itself down. You will not find F76 on Vaillant's own fault-code page, so here is what the installer manual actually says, what is safe for you to check, and what to tell the engineer.
What does the Vaillant F76 fault code mean?
Vaillant F76 means the overheat protection on your boiler's main heat exchanger has tripped, so the boiler has locked itself out to stop it firing. You cannot fix this yourself: the part sits inside the sealed casing. Reset once, and if F76 comes straight back, book a Gas Safe registered engineer.
F76 is not on Vaillant's public fault-code page at vaillant.co.uk, which runs from F.75 straight to F.83. The code lives in the installer manuals instead, where Vaillant writes it with a dot, as F.76. Vaillant's installation and servicing instructions for the ecoTEC plus 806, 1006 and 1206 (document 0020134823_10) word it as “Overheating protection on primary heat exchanger has responded”, and give the cause as “Cable or cable connections for safety fuse in primary heat exchanger or primary heat exchanger defective”. The exact wording changes from manual to manual, from “triggered” to “has responded” to “The safety cut-out in the primary heat exchanger is defective”, but all three describe the same protection device. So if you searched Vaillant's website and came away with nothing, that is why. The fault is real and it is documented, just not on the consumer page.
In plain terms, a thermal safety fuse sits on the primary heat exchanger. If that heat exchanger gets too hot, the fuse breaks the circuit and the boiler stops. It is a last-resort protection, and the boiler will usually lock out again until an engineer has found out why it operated.
One thing you may read elsewhere is that F76 always means a whole new heat exchanger. Vaillant's manuals do not say that. The cause Vaillant lists first is a cable or a cable connection, and trade repairers report that wiring is the more common finding. A damaged heat exchanger is a genuine possibility, but it is not a foregone conclusion, so wait for the engineer's diagnosis before you make any decisions about the boiler.

- Hours differ by product: one-off repair appointments run Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, while cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00. Outside cover-plan hours you are only seen sooner for a genuine emergency breakdown, so a Friday-evening fault can wait until Monday.
- Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period from the first time you use a service. There is a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends the moment a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
Why is my Vaillant showing F76?
Because something made the primary heat exchanger too hot, or because the boiler thinks it did. Vaillant's own listed cause covers both halves: a fault in the safety fuse, its cable or its plug connection, or a defective primary heat exchanger. The first half is a wiring problem, the second is a heat problem.
Behind those two, there is usually a reason the heat built up in the first place. Poor circulation is the classic one: a failing pump, a sludged or blocked heat exchanger, a closed valve, or air left in the system after work on the heating. Very low water content does the same thing, because there is not enough water in the heat exchanger to carry the heat away.

Can I fix a Vaillant F76 myself?
No, and it is worth being straight about that. F76 is not a code you can clear with a top-up or a bleed. A safety device has operated, and the fuse, the wiring and the heat exchanger all sit behind the sealed casing, which you should never open. What you can do is gather information, so the engineer arrives already knowing half the answer. Work through these in order.
1. Read the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler and write the number down. Below about 1 bar suggests the system has lost water, which is useful for the engineer to know.
2. Check the room thermostat is calling for heat and its batteries are working, so you can say whether the boiler is being asked to fire at all.
3. Look at the outside of the boiler and the pipework around it for obvious damage or water leaking. Do not open or remove any casing panels.
4. Check whether your other gas appliances and other electrical items still work, so you know the problem is the boiler and not the gas or power supply to the house.
5. Press the reset button once, exactly as your Vaillant user guide describes. If F76 comes straight back, stop. Reset only once.
Stop there. Do not keep pressing reset. The code means a safety device has operated, and repeatedly resetting a boiler that keeps locking out achieves nothing except delaying the repair.
While you wait, never use a gas cooker, a hob or an unflued portable heater to warm a room. They are not made for heating a house and they can produce carbon monoxide. Use electric heating instead and keep the room ventilated.
Everything else on this fault is engineer work: removing the casing, testing or replacing the thermal safety fuse, testing the wiring harness and connectors, inspecting or replacing the primary heat exchanger, testing the pump or power flushing the system, and entering any diagnostic code in the boiler menu.

How is F76 different from F75, F77, F20 and F22?
These codes sit close together and people mix them up constantly, partly because several of them involve heat or water. F.75 is the one directly before F76 and the one it is most often mistyped as: Vaillant words it as the pressure change being too low when the pump starts, which usually points at a failed pump or pressure sensor, or air in the system. F.77 is the one directly after, covering the flue non-return flap or a defective condensate pump. F.74 is a water pressure sensor signal outside its correct range.
The trickiest confusion is with F.20, which Vaillant describes as the safety thermal cut-out operating and shutting the boiler off. Both F.20 and F76 mean an overheat protection has tripped, so they describe the same kind of problem even though the display shows different codes. They are different devices, though. F.20 is the separate overheat thermostat. F76 is the heat exchanger's own thermal safety fuse. F.20 is listed on Vaillant's public consumer page, F76 is not.
F.22 is worth knowing about too. It means low water pressure in the system, and it frequently shows up before or alongside F76, because low water content is one of the routes by which a heat exchanger overheats in the first place. If you have seen F.22 recently, mention it to the engineer, because the two are often linked.
When should I call a Gas Safe registered engineer?
As soon as F76 returns after one reset, which it usually does. This is not a wait-and-see code. The boiler has locked itself out on purpose, and only an engineer can find out why and clear it safely.
It helps to know what the visit will involve, so you are not in the dark. The engineer will normally open the casing, test the thermal safety fuse on the primary heat exchanger and the wiring and connectors that run to it, and check whether water is actually circulating properly through the boiler. What the repair turns out to be depends on what those tests show. It may be a wiring or connection repair, a circulation fault such as a failing pump or a blocked heat exchanger, or a replacement primary heat exchanger. Vaillant lists a cable or cable connection fault as its first cause, so wait for the diagnosis before you assume the worst.
If a heat exchanger does come up, that is a real decision, so ask for the figures before you agree to anything.
