CORGI HomePlan Alternative
Thinking of leaving CORGI HomePlan? Smart Plan is a modular home-cover service plan - not insurance. You build your own cover from seven modules and pay only for what you pick. Worth knowing up front: once you use a service, a 12-month agreement period begins.
Switching from CORGI HomePlan
If you're leaving CORGI HomePlan, Smart Plan is a modular home-cover service plan - not an insurance policy. Instead of choosing a fixed plan, you build your cover from seven modules - boiler and central heating, plumbing, drainage, electrical, appliances, pests and security - and pay only for the ones you pick.
There's one commitment to be clear about before you switch: Smart Plan is billed monthly, but the moment you use a service a 12-month minimum agreement period starts, and leaving early carries a charge (see the small print below). So this is a modular plan you can shape - not a promise you can walk away at any time.
CORGI HomePlan is sold as a set of fixed plans. Smart Plan works differently: it's a service plan, not insurance, from UK Boiler Company Ltd, which has been trading since 2014, with over 15,000 customers. This page sets out, plainly and neutrally, how the two compare so you can decide what suits your home. The comparison here was last checked in July 2026 against CORGI HomePlan's own published terms.
Key facts
The essentials, including the commitments, before you read on:
- Smart Plan is a build-your-own plan - pick only the cover modules you want, from seven - and it's a service plan, not an insurance policy
- Once you use a service, a 12-month minimum agreement period begins. If you leave during it, you'll pay the remaining monthly payments, or 75% of the outstanding balance as a one-off - so it isn't a walk-away-anytime plan
- Parts and labour are covered only up to your cover limit: boilers up to £500 (under 7 years old) or just £200 (over 7 years old), £225 per appliance, and up to £500 on other modules. A repair bill above the cap is not fully funded
- A £95 call-out fee applies in defined cases - including if your boiler fails in the first 30 days of joining, so an early breakdown can cost you £95 up front
- Call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00-18:00; only a genuine emergency breakdown (which Smart Plan assesses) is handled outside those hours
- You also get a 14-day cooling-off period when you first sign up - but it ends the moment a service is carried out
- Cover is from UK Boiler Company Ltd, trading since 2014, with over 15,000 customers
- Comparison last checked July 2026 against CORGI HomePlan's own published terms
CORGI HomePlan vs Smart Plan at a glance
Here's how the two line up, side by side. The table below is descriptive, not a price comparison - real prices depend on the plan or modules you choose, so build your plan or check each provider's own terms for figures.
| CORGI HomePlan | Smart Plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Product type | Insurance-backed home cover | Service plan (not insurance) |
| Plan structure | Four fixed plans | Build your own from seven modules |
| What you cover | The plan tier you choose | Only the modules you pick |
| Getting a price | Request a quote on CORGI's site | Build your plan to see your price before you join |
| Leaving / commitment | Full refund within 14 days; after that cancellation charges may apply (CORGI's terms) | 14-day cooling-off that ends once a service is used; then a 12-month agreement period once you use a service, with a 75% early-exit charge |
What CORGI HomePlan includes
To keep this fair, here's what CORGI HomePlan offers, taken from its own website. CORGI HomePlan offers four plans - Essentials, Starter, Advanced and Complete - with an annual boiler service and parts and labour included. It's aimed at homeowners who want a single fixed plan with a service bundled in. If that's what you're after, CORGI may well suit you.
How CORGI HomePlan cancellation works
If you're thinking about leaving, check CORGI's own terms first. According to CORGI HomePlan's FAQ, you get a full refund if you cancel within 14 days of receiving your policy documents. After that, their FAQ states you're "free to leave at any time, however cancellation charges may apply".
To cancel, CORGI's FAQ lists 0800 085 0845 or customerservices@corgihomeplan.co.uk. We won't overstate this - "cancellation charges may apply" is CORGI's exact wording, and any amount depends on your own plan, so read your terms before you act.
Why some customers switch to a modular plan
The clearest difference is structure. With a fixed plan you take the tier as it comes. With Smart Plan you build your own cover from seven modules - boiler and central heating, plumbing, drainage, electrical, appliances, pests and security - and pay only for the ones you pick. If you only want, say, boiler and drainage cover, you don't have to carry the rest.
As you build your plan you'll see your price before you join, so you can decide with the figures in front of you.
Honest about the small print
This is the part to read twice. Smart Plan is billed monthly, but once you use a service a 12-month minimum agreement period begins - so it isn't a case of leaving the moment you've had a repair. If you leave during that period, you'll pay the remaining monthly payments, or 75% of the outstanding balance as a one-off payment. The 14-day cooling-off period you get when you first sign up ends the moment a service is carried out, so book a repair in week one and the cooling-off protection is gone. "Flexible" here means you choose your modules - it isn't a promise that you can walk away with no commitment.
What "we'll fix it" actually covers
When something covered goes wrong, we'll arrange the repair - but only up to your cover limit, not without limit. That limit can be modest: a boiler over 7 years old is capped at £200, appliances at £225, and other modules at £500. A real boiler repair can exceed £200, and anything above your cap isn't funded by the plan, so it's worth checking the limit on each module before you rely on it.
A service plan, not insurance
Smart Plan is a service plan from UK Boiler Company Ltd, not insurance. Our terms and conditions state the plan is not a contract of insurance. It's a membership with the cover you've chosen, and when something covered goes wrong, we'll arrange a repair up to your cover limit.
Best for: which suits which household
CORGI HomePlan may suit you if...
You want a single fixed plan with an annual boiler service bundled in, and you're happy to take one of four set tiers.
Smart Plan may suit you if...
You'd rather build your own cover, pay only for the modules you'll actually use, and have a service plan rather than an insurance policy - and you're comfortable that a 12-month agreement period begins once you use a service, with a 75% early-exit charge if you leave during it.
Who carries out the work
Whichever provider you choose, gas work should only ever be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. With Smart Plan, when something covered goes wrong we'll arrange a vetted, Gas Safe registered engineer from a national network to put it right, with parts and labour covered up to your cover limit - and, as above, that limit caps what the plan pays. Call-outs under your cover plan are carried out Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 18:00. Outside those hours, only a genuine emergency breakdown is attended, and it's Smart Plan - not you - that decides whether a breakdown qualifies, so don't assume out-of-hours cover.
We're upfront about costs, and one is easy to miss: a £95 call-out fee, paid in advance before an engineer attends, applies in defined cases. That includes the first 30 days of a new agreement - so if your boiler fails just after you join, expect to pay £95 up front. It also applies where the issue falls under an exclusion; where our engineer can't get access to your property; and if you request your annual service within the first 30 days.
If you ever smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, leave it to the experts. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away, and always use a Gas Safe registered engineer for any work on your boiler or gas appliances. Never attempt gas repairs yourself.

Does CORGI HomePlan charge a cancellation fee?
CORGI HomePlan gives a full refund if you cancel within 14 days of receiving your documents. After that, their FAQ states you're free to leave at any time, "however cancellation charges may apply". Always check your own CORGI plan terms before you cancel.
How do I cancel my CORGI HomePlan?

Can I leave Smart Plan whenever I like?
Not once you've used a service. Smart Plan is billed monthly, but the moment a service is carried out a 12-month minimum agreement period begins. If you leave during it, you'll pay the remaining monthly payments, or 75% of the outstanding balance as a one-off. There's a 14-day cooling-off period when you first sign up, but it ends as soon as a service is carried out.
Is Smart Plan cheaper than CORGI HomePlan?
It depends on the modules you choose, because Smart Plan is modular rather than a set of fixed plans. Rather than comparing headline prices, build your plan to see what your chosen modules cost before you join, and pick only the cover you actually want.
What is the difference between CORGI HomePlan and Smart Plan?
CORGI HomePlan is sold as four fixed plans. Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance: you build your cover from seven modules and pay only for what you choose, but a 12-month agreement period begins once you use a service. Both offer a 14-day cooling-off period, though with Smart Plan it ends the moment a service is carried out.
Is Smart Plan an insurance policy?
No. Smart Plan is a service plan from UK Boiler Company Ltd, not insurance. It's a membership with the cover you've chosen, and when something covered goes wrong we'll arrange a repair up to your cover limit - for example up to £200 on a boiler over 7 years old - rather than without limit.
Is there a call-out fee with Smart Plan?
Yes, and it's easy to miss. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in defined cases: during the first 30 days of a new agreement (so an early breakdown can cost you £95 up front); where the issue is excluded; where our engineer can't get access; and if you ask for your annual service within the first 30 days.
