Boiler making a noise? What each sound means

Nearly every boiler noise traces to one of four things: air in the system, scale or sludge restricting the flow, a blocked condensate pipe, or a part inside the boiler failing. The gauge and bleeding a radiator are yours. Anything behind the casing is engineer work. If you can smell gas, or hear hissing at the gas pipework or meter, ring 0800 111 999 first.

First: the noises that mean stop

Two things come before any troubleshooting. The first is a suspected escape of gas. A hiss or sharp whistle at the gas pipework, the meter or the boiler connections, with or without a smell, ends the diagnosis. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Put out naked flames, do not touch electrical switches, open windows and doors, and turn the gas off at the meter control valve if you can.

Carbon monoxide is the second. HSE lists the early signs as “headaches or dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, loss of consciousness, tiredness”, and the signs on the appliance as “yellow or orange rather than blue flames (except fuel effect fires or flueless appliances which display this colour flame), soot or yellow/brown staining around or on appliances, pilot lights that frequently blow out”. A noise alongside any of those is an emergency, not a repair job.

One rule shapes the rest. HSE states that “anyone employed to work on gas appliances in domestic premises must be a Gas Safe registered engineer”. The casing stays on.

Banging and kettling

Two different noises get called banging. A single sharp bang at the moment the burner lights is a burner problem, not scale. Do not keep running the boiler through it: book a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Kettling is the other one: a rumble or boiling-kettle whistle that builds as the boiler heats, because water cannot move through the heat exchanger fast enough and overheats in place. Limescale does that in hard water areas, sludge in older systems. Worcester Bosch names the symptom you can spot from the hallway: “If this is the other way round (cold at the bottom and hot at the top) this could mean that sludge has built up in your radiator”.

The fix is a system clean rather than a part. Worcester Bosch's cleansing guidance is that the recommendations within BS7593 should be followed, with an inhibitor going back in afterwards. Whistling

Two whistles, unrelated, so start with where the sound is. Neither is the hiss at the gas pipework described above, which is an emergency and nothing else.

A whistle or bubble in the radiators is air. Worcester Bosch's wording for the air case is that radiators “will be colder at the top than at the bottom”, and the answer is to bleed them. Bleeding drops the pressure, so read the gauge afterwards. A whistle only when a hot tap runs is the water supply instead, and where the incoming mains pressure is high a water pressure governor may be needed. That is a measurement for an engineer, and a nuisance rather than a danger. Either whistle turns urgent only if a fault code, a falling gauge, or the signs above come with it.

Gurgling

Gurgling in cold weather, followed by the boiler stopping, points at a frozen or blocked condensate pipe. On an Ideal boiler that shows as an L2 lockout. On a Baxi, a frozen condensate pipe can trigger E133, E119, E128, E53 or E23. Note the code before you reset anything.

This is the one noise you can usually clear yourself. Follow the plastic pipe outside and look at the most exposed point, at a bend, or in a dip. A hot water bottle, a heat pack or a cloth soaked in hot water will thaw it. Never use boiling water: the run-off refreezes into a slip hazard. Never work above ground level, and if the pipe is out of safe reach, book an engineer. Gurgling in summer, or from the radiators, is more likely to be air.

Humming, vibration and clicking

A low hum while the boiler runs is the pump and the fan. What matters is change: a hum that has grown loud, or a vibration through the wall. Pump speed is an installer setting, and the pump and its mountings sit behind the casing, so this is a booking rather than an emergency, unless a code comes with it.

A fast, regular click for a few seconds at start-up is the spark ignition lighting the burner, and it is normal. The click that repeats and never catches is not. After a set number of failed attempts the boiler locks out on an ignition fault code, which is a gas fault and needs an engineer. Reset once and once only: repeated resets in a short window can add a lockout of their own.

Dripping and running water

Running water when nothing is running, or a drip from the boiler or its pipework, is urgent whatever the gauge says, because water inside the casing sits alongside live electrics. It is not a homeowner repair.

The gauge is evidence rather than a test. Ideal Heating and Vaillant both publish 1 to 1.5 bar as the cold reading for a sealed system. A gauge below that and still falling points at a leak, and Vaillant explains where the water goes: pipes and radiators “can corrode or loosen over time, eventually allowing water to escape the system”. Top up once, to the figure in your manual. If it falls again within days, stop and book someone.

What you can safely check yourself

All of this happens outside the casing.

  • Work out where the sound is. Boiler, radiators, floor pipework and the outside pipe point at different things.
  • Read the pressure gauge cold and write the number down. A gauge drifting down week by week tells you more than the noise does.
  • Bleed any radiator that is hot at the bottom and cold at the top, then re-check the pressure.
  • Note the fault code exactly as written, then reset once and stop.
  • Never take the casing off. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on a gas appliance.

When to stop and book someone

Book an engineer if the noise returns after a reset, if the boiler bangs as it lights, if the pressure will not hold, if you can hear water escaping, or if a fault code keeps coming back.

Why is my boiler making a banging noise?

Should I turn my boiler off if it is making a noise?

Probably not, and it is worth being straight about why. Cover starts when your agreement starts, but for the first 30 days any call-out carries the £95 call-out fee, paid in advance. If our engineer attends and identifies an existing defect, we quote to put it right, and if you decline that quote the terms class that part as an exclusion. Most of the noises on this page also sit in the general exclusions: work caused by sludge, scale deposits, rust or corrosion is excluded, and so is frost damage, which is what a frozen condensate pipe is.
