Radiator cold at the bottom: why bleeding will not fix it

Cold at the bottom and warm at the top usually means sludge rather than air, so bleeding will not help. Worcester Bosch says the opposite pattern, cold at the top, is the one you bleed. Check the valve at each end of the radiator first, because a seized valve leaves a panel cold too. Clearing real sludge means flushing, which is engineer work.

Which end is cold tells you what is wrong

Worcester Bosch draws the line in one sentence on its own bleeding page. Air in a radiator means “they will be colder at the top than at the bottom”. Then comes the part most guides leave out: “If this is the other way round (cold at the bottom and hot at the top) this could mean that sludge has built up”.

That is the physics of it. Air is lighter than water, so it rises to the top few inches of the panel. Sludge is heavier, so it settles across the bottom. Opening the bleed valve at the top of a radiator with a cold bottom releases nothing useful: you lose some system water, the gauge drops, and the cold half stays cold.

So run the heating for twenty minutes and feel the radiator at four points: top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right. A cold bottom edge with a warm top is the sludge pattern. A cold top edge with a warm bottom is the air pattern, and that is the one our bleeding guide is written for.

Before you assume the worst, check the valves. A radiator with a closed or seized valve at one end goes cold without any sludge in it, and a thermostatic valve left on its lowest setting all summer often seizes with the pin held down. That check costs nothing, and it is worth ruling out before anyone quotes you for a flush.

Why sludge lands at the bottom

Sludge is the dark deposit that builds up as the water in a sealed heating system slowly corrodes the metal in the radiators and pipes. It is heavier than the water carrying it, so it drops out wherever the flow slows, and the slowest, widest part of the circuit is the base of a radiator panel.

Once a layer sits there, the hot water takes the short route across the top and leaves. The bottom of the panel is still full of water, but that water barely moves, so only the part of the panel the water still runs through gives out heat and the room warms more slowly. Five minutes of checks before you call anyone

None of this involves opening the boiler or touching the gas supply, so it is all safe to do yourself.

  • Run the heating for twenty minutes, then feel the radiator at the top and bottom of both ends. Write down which corners are cold.
  • Check the valve at each end of the radiator is open, including the thermostatic one. A seized or closed valve leaves a panel cold with no sludge involved.
  • Feel the other radiators the same way. One cold bottom is a single blocked panel. Several is a system-wide problem and a different conversation.
  • Look at the boiler pressure gauge with the system cold. Most boilers should read 1 to 1.5 bar, and our boiler pressure guide, linked below, sets out the figures and who publishes them. This will not fix a cold bottom, but you want to know the reading before anyone changes anything.
  • Do not bleed it. Feeling all four corners already tells you which pattern you have, and bleeding a radiator that is cold at the bottom only costs you system pressure.

What actually clears it, and how to get it done

Cleaning the system is the fix, and it is not a homeowner job. Vaillant is direct about it: if radiators still feel cold after bleeding, the system may need flushing, and “this must be done by a heating engineer”. A single blocked radiator can sometimes be taken off the wall and flushed on its own. A system-wide problem needs the whole circuit cleaning, the job most people know as a power flush.

Two things are worth knowing before you book. This is maintenance rather than a breakdown, so it sits outside our cover plan. And the price varies with the size of the system and how bad the build-up is, so get a heating engineer to inspect it before quoting rather than taking a number over the phone.

Expect the quote to track the number of radiators rather than the size of the house, because each one is worked through in turn. Ask whether an inhibitor and an in-line filter are included, because a clean without them starts the clock again. Get two or three quotes if you can, and check the engineer on the Gas Safe Register if the work will touch the boiler as well.

Catch it in the autumn, not in January

The check is quick. On a cool evening in September or October, put the heating on for half an hour and walk round the house with your hand out. Anything cold at the top gets bled. Anything cold at the bottom gets a phone call. Do the bleeding first, because it lets water out of a sealed system and the gauge always drops afterwards. Worcester Bosch puts it plainly: once you have finished bleeding all the radiators, “make sure you top up the pressure on your boiler”. Top up using the filling loop as set out in your boiler's own manual, since the loop varies by model, and call an engineer if you cannot find it or the pressure keeps dropping.

Where the safe line is

Bleeding a radiator and checking a pressure gauge are homeowner jobs. Draining the system, taking a radiator off the wall, flushing, or anything involving the boiler itself is not. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on a gas appliance, and the boiler feeding those radiators is one.

Will bleeding a radiator that is cold at the bottom help?

No. Bleeding releases air, and air rises to the top of a radiator, so it can only fix a cold top. Worcester Bosch says cold at the bottom and hot at the top could mean sludge has built up instead. Opening the bleed valve there loses you system water and leaves the cold half exactly as it was.

How do I tell sludge from trapped air?

A valve fault usually leaves the whole panel cold, while sludge leaves the top warm and the bottom cold.

Is a radiator cold at the bottom dangerous?

Not in itself. It is a flow problem, not a safety problem, and the room simply gets less heat than it should. What it does do is make the boiler work harder for the same result, so it is worth dealing with rather than living with.

Why is only one radiator cold at the bottom?

Usually because it is the one where the water moves slowest, which is often the radiator furthest from the boiler or on a long pipe run. Sludge drops out wherever flow is weakest. If several radiators show the same pattern, the problem is the system rather than that one panel.
