What is a combi boiler?

A combi boiler is designed to combine a water heater and a central heating boiler into one highly efficient unit. Combination boilers take the water directly from the mains to provide hot water and heat on demand. The system has control valves that open or close to direct hot water to the radiators or, when the tap opens, deliver instant hot water to the tap.

Unlike traditional boilers, combination boilers do not require a separate tank or cylinder to store water, which makes them a popular option for houses with limited space.

What homes are combi boilers best suited for?

Although Vaillant Combi Boilers are designed to accommodate homes of all shapes and sizes, combi boilers are best suited for properties with limited loft space and moderate hot water demands. Continue reading to find the right sized Vaillant Combi boiler for your home.

How energy efficient are the Vaillant combi boilers?

All Vaillant combi boilers have an efficiency rating of 89%, which puts them into the top efficiency category, ‘A’. Efficiency levels assess how much of the fuel, so in this case, gas, is turned into heat and how much is wasted during the process. 89% efficiency means that 11% of used energy leaves the system as gases emitted via the flue pipe. This makes Vaillant combi boilers much more efficient than most traditional boilers, which have efficiencies of 60% and lower.

Combi boilers allow you to save money as they heat water in small quantities, compared to traditional boilers that require you to heat up an entire cylinder full of water just to wash your hands! Some Vaillant combi boilers can be installed with accessories that can help boost your boiler’s efficiency and help you save even more on your energy bills. What size combi do I need for my home?

The first step in selecting the best Vaillant combi boiler for your home is determining the appropriate boiler size. When we refer to 'boiler size', what we really mean is the boiler's power output. Below is a rough guide to how powerful your combi boiler should be to efficiently heat different sized properties. Use these values to estimate the recommended energy output of your Vaillant combi boiler.

Property Type No. of Bathrooms No. of Radiators Recommended energy output Recommended hot water flow rate
Small house or flat 1 Up to 10 24-27 kW 9-12 litres/minute
Medium house 1 or 2 Up to 15 28-34 kW 12-16 litres/minute
Large house 2+ Up to 25 35-45 kW 16+ litres/minute

Choosing a combi boiler with the right energy output will maintain your home's comfort while also saving you money on energy costs. Combi boilers with larger kW outputs usually deliver higher hot water flow rates, making them more suitable for homes with two and more bathrooms.

Ecotec Plus Combination Store 938

This Vaillant model is a combination storage boiler, which means there is a hot water cylinder built into the back of the boiler. Whilst a standard combi boiler draws water directly from the mains supply and heats water on demand, a storage combi not only does this but also stores a supply of hot water in the cylinder.

This feature allows the Vaillant Ecotec Plus Store to deliver exceptional hot water flow rates (up to 20 litres per minute) to meet the needs of larger homes with several bathrooms. A storage combi boiler can deliver hot water as and when you need it, through multiple outlets at the same time.

Key features:

  • Comes with a standard warranty of 5 years that can be extended to 10 when you register with Vaillant Advance, Vaillant’s loyalty program.
  • Can deliver up to 20 litres of hot water per minute, which is significantly more than a traditional combi boiler, ensuring high pressure at all taps and showers
  • Unlike other combi storage models, Ecotec Plus Store can be easily wall-mounted and comes in a relatively compact size.

Perfect for: Large homes with multiple showers and taps that sometimes need to run at the same time.
