Vaillant F54 fault code: gas supply fault explained
F54 tells you the problem is the gas getting to the burner, and it usually shows alongside F28 or F29. Here's what's safe to check yourself and when to call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What does the Vaillant F54 fault code mean?
The Vaillant F54 fault code indicates a fault in the gas supply, and it usually appears together with F28 or F29. It commonly means a closed gas isolator, low gas pressure, a prepay meter out of credit or a faulty gas valve. You can check the gas supply and meter; anything involving gas pressure or the valve is a Gas Safe registered engineer's job.
Vaillant's own fault-code list defines F54 as “Fault in the gas supply (in combination with F.28/F.29)”. In plain terms, F54 rarely shows on its own. It sits alongside an F28 (the boiler fails to ignite) or an F29 (the flame is lost during operation) to tell the engineer that the root problem is the gas reaching the burner, not the ignition hardware itself.
Key facts
The quick version, before the detail.
- Meaning: a fault in the gas supply, shown with F28 or F29 (Vaillant's official wording).
- DIY-fixable? Partly — gas isolator, meter credit and other-appliance checks only.
- Gas Safe job if: gas pressure or the gas valve is involved, or the code persists.
- Most common on: the Vaillant ecoTEC range, especially older models.
- Smart Plan boiler & central heating cover: parts and labour up to £500 a year if the boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it is over 7. F54 is most common on older boilers, so many affected homes fall under the £200 limit.
- A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan does not cover, if the engineer cannot get access, and for early annual-service requests.
- Cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00–18:00. Outside those hours you are only seen sooner for a genuine emergency breakdown, so a Friday-evening or weekend fault can wait until Monday.
- Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period the first time you use a service. There is a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends once a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
Why does the F54 code appear?
F54 points at the gas supply rather than the boiler's electronics. The common causes are a closed gas isolator cock, insufficient gas supply or low gas flow pressure, a defective gas valve, or a general supply fault. It shows up most on the Vaillant ecoTEC range, especially older models, where it pairs with the F28 and F29 ignition faults.
The table below runs through the likely causes, what you'll notice, and who can safely deal with each one.
F54 causes and who fixes them
| Likely cause | What you'll notice | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Closed gas isolator cock | The lever by the boiler sits across the pipe; other gas appliances may be off too. | You can check the lever is in line with the pipe (open). |
| Prepay meter out of credit | The boiler and other gas appliances stop once the meter runs down. | Top up the meter, then reset the boiler once. |
| Insufficient gas supply / low gas flow pressure | The boiler struggles to stay lit, often when it's working harder. | Gas Safe registered engineer only. |
| Defective gas valve | Repeated lockouts; the boiler can't sustain a flame. | Gas Safe registered engineer only. |
| General gas supply fault | F54 persists with F28 or F29 after the basic checks. | Gas Safe registered engineer or your gas supplier. |
Can I fix a Vaillant F54 myself?
There are a few safe checks you can make before booking anyone. None of them involve opening the boiler or touching the gas valve — that's the line you never cross. Work through them in this order.
1. Check your other gas appliances. If your hob or gas fire won't work either, the problem is the gas supply, not the boiler.
2. If you're on a prepay meter, check it has credit. A meter that has run down will shut off the gas to the boiler.
3. Find the gas isolator cock next to the boiler and check it's fully open — the lever should sit in line with the pipe, not across it.
4. Reset the boiler once, following the steps in your Vaillant manual. Reset only once.
Stop there. Testing gas flow pressure or the gas valve means taking readings on a live gas supply, which is illegal for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered. If F54 comes back after these checks, book an engineer rather than resetting again.
F54 with F28 or F29 — what the combination means
F54 almost never travels alone. F28 means the boiler failed to ignite on start-up; F29 means it lit but then lost the flame while running. On their own, those two codes point at the flame. F54 adds the missing detail: the reason the flame won't catch or hold is the gas supply itself.
Vaillant lists F54 explicitly as occurring “in combination with F.28/F.29”. For the engineer, that combination is a signpost — check the gas supply pressure and the valve first, rather than starting with the ignition electrodes. If you're seeing one of the partner codes too, our Vaillant F28 and F29 guides explain each in more detail.
When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer
If the isolator is open, the meter has credit and your other gas appliances are working but F54 (with F28 or F29) keeps coming back, it needs a gas-pressure and valve check by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That's specialist, legally restricted work — not a DIY job.
A gas-supply fault that needs a new gas valve is a bigger job than a simple reset, so the parts and labour can add up. That's worth weighing against how you'd rather cover it — a one-off repair or an ongoing module.
You can book a one-off repair with us and a Gas Safe registered engineer will come and fix it, or call us on 0333 772 6247. A Smart Plan boiler and central heating module covers parts and labour up to £500 a year if your boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it's over 7. Because F54 is most common on older boilers, many affected homes fall under the £200 limit — and a larger gas-valve repair can cost more than that, so you would pay anything above the limit yourself. Cover is modular, so you only pick what you want.
A few things worth knowing before you set up cover. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan doesn't cover, if the engineer can't get access, and for early annual-service requests. Cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00–18:00; outside those hours you're only seen sooner for a genuine emergency breakdown as set out in your terms, so a fault on a Friday evening or over the weekend can wait until Monday. And using any module starts a 12-month agreement period from the first time you use a service — there's a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends the moment a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance. In plain terms, it's a membership that arranges and funds covered repairs up to the limits on your plan, rather than a regulated financial product — it doesn't pay out a cash sum, and cover is limited to the modules you've chosen and the limits set out in your terms. It's provided by UK Boiler Company Ltd, which has traded since 2014 and looked after over 15,000 customers.
One safety note: if you ever smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, don't wait for an engineer — call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away.
Vaillant F54 fault code FAQs
What does F54 mean on a Vaillant boiler?
F54 is a gas supply fault on Vaillant boilers, usually shown alongside F28 or F29. It points to a closed gas isolator, low gas pressure, a prepay meter with no credit, or a faulty gas valve as the reason the boiler cannot maintain a flame.
Can I fix a Vaillant F54 fault myself?
You can safely check that other gas appliances work, the meter has credit and the gas isolator cock by the boiler is fully open, then reset once. Testing gas pressure or the gas valve must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Why does F54 show with F28 or F29?
F28 and F29 report that the boiler failed to ignite or lost its flame; F54 adds that the underlying cause is the gas supply. Together they tell the engineer to check gas pressure and the valve rather than the ignition components first.
Is a Vaillant F54 fault an emergency?
F54 is a safety lockout, so the boiler is off rather than running unsafely. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately. Otherwise it is safe to leave the boiler off and book a Gas Safe registered engineer to check the supply.
If I set up Smart Plan cover, am I tied in?
Cover is billed monthly, but the first time you use a service a 12-month agreement period begins. There is a 14-day cooling-off period that ends once a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, also applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan does not cover, no-access visits and early annual-service requests. Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance, so it funds covered repairs up to your cover limit rather than paying out a cash sum.

Book a one-off repair and a Gas Safe registered engineer will check the gas supply, or set up a Smart Plan boiler and central heating module so covered repairs are handled up to your cover limit — up to £500 a year for a boiler under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it's older (F54 is most common on older boilers, so many homes fall under the £200 limit). It's a service plan, not insurance, so it funds covered repairs rather than paying out a cash sum. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan doesn't cover, no-access visits and early annual-service requests. Cover-plan call-outs are Monday to Friday, 08:00–18:00 unless it's a genuine emergency. Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period once you first use a service; leaving early costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
