Vaillant F26 fault code: gas valve fault explained
F26 points to the gas valve stepper motor, the part that opens and meters the gas to the burner. Here's what is safe to check yourself and when to call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What does the Vaillant F26 fault code mean?
The Vaillant F26 fault code indicates a fault with the gas valve stepper motor, the small motor that opens and regulates the gas valve so the right amount of gas reaches the burner. When the boiler cannot drive that valve correctly, it locks out on F26 as a safety measure. This is an internal gas component, so the repair is a Gas Safe registered engineer's job, not a DIY fix.
Vaillant's engineer documentation describes F26 as a stepper-motor fault on the gas valve, and established heating sources agree: the code most often means a failed stepper motor or a broken electrical connection between the control board (PCB) and the gas valve. F26 is not printed on Vaillant's public consumer fault-code list, but it is well documented as a gas-valve fault on the ecoTEC range. Because it involves the gas valve, the only safe thing you can try at home is a single reset.
Key facts
The quick version, before the detail.
- Meaning: a fault with the gas valve stepper motor, the motor that operates the gas valve.
- DIY-fixable? No, beyond a single reset. The stepper motor, gas valve and their wiring are engineer-only.
- Gas Safe job if: F26 returns after one reset, which it usually does, since the parts involved are internal.
- Most common on: the Vaillant ecoTEC range.
- Smart Plan boiler & central heating cover: parts and labour up to £500 a year if the boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it is over 7. Which limit applies depends on your boiler's age, not the fault.
- A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan does not cover, if the engineer cannot get access, and for early annual-service requests.
- Cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00. Outside those hours you are only seen sooner for a genuine emergency breakdown, so a Friday-evening or weekend fault can wait until Monday.
- Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period the first time you use a service. There is a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends once a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
Why does the F26 code appear?
F26 points at the gas valve and the stepper motor that drives it, rather than at ignition or pressure. The common causes are a failed or seized gas valve stepper motor, a broken electrical connection or damaged cable between the PCB and the gas valve, a faulty gas valve itself, or a control board (PCB) fault. It shows up most on the Vaillant ecoTEC range.
The table below runs through the likely causes, what you'll notice, and who can safely deal with each one. Almost every line is engineer-only, because working on a live gas valve is legally restricted.
F26 causes and who fixes them
| Likely cause | What you'll notice | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Failed gas valve stepper motor | Repeated lockouts; the boiler will not fire or drops out shortly after starting. | Gas Safe registered engineer only. |
| Broken connection between PCB and gas valve | F26 returns after a reset; sometimes an intermittent wiring or connector fault. | Gas Safe registered engineer only. |
| Faulty gas valve | The boiler cannot open or meter the gas correctly, so it locks out. | Gas Safe registered engineer only. |
| Control board (PCB) fault | F26 persists and other fault codes may appear alongside it. | Gas Safe registered engineer only. |
| One-off glitch | A single F26 that clears and does not come back. | You can reset the boiler once to clear it. |
Can I fix a Vaillant F26 myself?
There is very little to do at home with an F26, because the fault sits inside the boiler on the gas valve. You must never open the boiler or touch the gas valve or its wiring. The safe checks are limited to these, in this order.
1. Check the boiler has power. Make sure the switched fused spur or plug is on and the display is lit.
2. Check your other gas appliances. If your hob or gas fire will not work either, the problem may be wider than the boiler, so report it to your gas supplier.
3. Reset the boiler once, following the steps in your Vaillant manual. Reset only once.
Stop there. The gas valve stepper motor, the gas valve and the wiring behind F26 are internal gas components, and working on them is illegal for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered. If F26 comes back after a single reset, book an engineer rather than resetting again.
When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer
If F26 comes back after one reset, it needs a Gas Safe registered engineer to test the gas valve, the stepper motor and the wiring back to the PCB. That is specialist, legally restricted work, not a DIY job, and in most cases a new stepper motor or gas valve is fitted.
A gas-valve or stepper-motor repair is a bigger job than a simple reset, so the parts and labour can add up. That's worth weighing against how you'd rather cover it: a one-off repair or an ongoing module.
You can book a one-off repair with us and a Gas Safe registered engineer will come and fix it, or call us on 0333 772 6247. A Smart Plan boiler and central heating module covers parts and labour up to £500 a year if your boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it's over 7. Which limit applies depends on your boiler's age, and a gas-valve repair can cost more than the yearly limit, so you would pay anything above the limit yourself. Cover is modular, so you only pick what you want.
A few things worth knowing before you set up cover. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan doesn't cover, if the engineer can't get access, and for early annual-service requests. Cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00; outside those hours you're only seen sooner for a genuine emergency breakdown as set out in your terms, so a fault on a Friday evening or over the weekend can wait until Monday. And using any module starts a 12-month agreement period from the first time you use a service: there's a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends the moment a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance. In plain terms, it's a membership that arranges and funds covered repairs up to the limits on your plan, rather than a regulated financial product: it doesn't pay out a cash sum, and cover is limited to the modules you've chosen and the limits set out in your terms. It's provided by UK Boiler Company Ltd, which has traded since 2014 and looked after over 15,000 customers.
One safety note: if you ever smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, don't wait for an engineer. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away.
Vaillant F26 fault code FAQs
What does F26 mean on a Vaillant boiler?
F26 is a gas valve fault on Vaillant boilers. It means the gas valve stepper motor, the motor that opens and meters the gas valve, is not working correctly, so the boiler locks out. It usually points to a failed stepper motor, a faulty gas valve, or a broken connection between the control board and the valve.
Can I fix a Vaillant F26 fault myself?
No, beyond a single reset. You can check the boiler has power and reset it once, following your Vaillant manual. The gas valve, the stepper motor and their wiring are internal gas parts, so any repair must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Why does F26 keep coming back after a reset?
Because the underlying fault is a physical one inside the boiler, usually a failed stepper motor, a faulty gas valve, or a broken electrical connection. A reset clears the lockout but not the cause, so F26 returns until a Gas Safe registered engineer replaces or repairs the part.
Is a Vaillant F26 fault an emergency?
F26 is a safety lockout, so the boiler is off rather than running unsafely. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately. Otherwise it is safe to leave the boiler off and book a Gas Safe registered engineer to check the gas valve and stepper motor.
If I set up Smart Plan cover, am I tied in?
Cover is billed monthly, but the first time you use a service a 12-month agreement period begins. There is a 14-day cooling-off period that ends once a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, also applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan does not cover, no-access visits and early annual-service requests. Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance, so it funds covered repairs up to your cover limit rather than paying out a cash sum.
Seeing F26 on your Vaillant? We'll come and fix it for you.
Book a one-off repair and a Gas Safe registered engineer will check the gas valve and stepper motor, or set up a Smart Plan boiler and central heating module so covered repairs are handled up to your cover limit: up to £500 a year for a boiler under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it's older. It's a service plan, not insurance, so it funds covered repairs rather than paying out a cash sum. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan doesn't cover, no-access visits and early annual-service requests. Cover-plan call-outs are Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00 unless it's a genuine emergency. Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period once you first use a service; leaving early costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
