Vaillant F61 fault code: gas valve fault explained

F61 means the boiler's control board cannot correctly operate the gas valve, so it locks out for safety. Here's what's safe to check yourself and when to call a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What does the Vaillant F61 fault code mean?

The Vaillant F61 fault code is a gas valve actuation fault. In plain terms, the boiler's control board (PCB) cannot correctly operate the gas valve, so the boiler locks out for safety rather than trying to run. It commonly means a faulty or seized gas valve, a wiring fault between the PCB and the valve, or a faulty PCB. Almost all of these are Gas Safe registered engineer work.

Vaillant's fault-code documentation describes F.61 as a fault in the actuation of the gas valve assembly. The boiler is sending the command to open the gas valve and start the burner, but that command is not getting through or the valve is not responding, so the boiler shuts down. Because the fault sits between the control electronics and a live gas component, there is very little you can safely do yourself before an engineer is needed.

Key facts

The quick version, before the detail.

  • Meaning: a gas valve actuation fault, the PCB cannot correctly operate the gas valve.
  • DIY-fixable? Barely. A single reset and a gas-supply check only, nothing internal.
  • Gas Safe job if: the gas valve, its wiring, or the PCB is involved, which is almost always.
  • Most common on: the Vaillant ecoTEC range.
  • Smart Plan boiler & central heating cover: parts and labour up to £500 a year if the boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it is over 7. A gas valve or PCB repair is a bigger job than a reset, so it can run beyond the limit.
  • A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan does not cover, if the engineer cannot get access, and for early annual-service requests.
  • Cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00. Outside those hours you are only seen sooner for a genuine emergency breakdown, so a Friday-evening or weekend fault can wait until Monday.
  • Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period the first time you use a service. There is a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends once a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.

Why does the F61 code appear?

F61 points at the gas valve and the electronics that control it, rather than the ignition electrodes or the flame sensor. The common causes are a faulty or seized gas valve, a loose or damaged wiring connection between the PCB and the valve, or a faulty PCB that can no longer send the correct signal. A gas supply fault is a less common cause, and water or condensation reaching the PCB or valve connections can also trigger it. It shows up most on the Vaillant ecoTEC range.

The table below runs through the likely causes, what you'll notice, and who can safely deal with each one.

F61 causes and who fixes them

Likely causeWhat you'll noticeWho fixes it
Faulty or seized gas valveRepeated ignition lockouts; the boiler cuts out and shows F61.Gas Safe registered engineer only.
Loose or damaged wiring between the PCB and gas valveIntermittent F61, sometimes after other work has been done near the boiler.Gas Safe registered engineer only.
Faulty PCB (printed circuit board)F61 keeps returning even after the gas valve has been checked.Gas Safe registered engineer only.
Water or condensation on the PCB or valve connectionsF61 after a leak, spillage or heavy condensation near the boiler.Gas Safe registered engineer only.
Gas supply fault (less common)Other gas appliances may struggle too, or a prepay meter has run down.Check other appliances and the meter; a persistent fault is engineer or supplier.

Can I fix a Vaillant F61 myself?

F61 is mostly an internal fault, so there is very little you can safely do yourself. None of the safe checks involve opening the boiler, touching the gas valve, or touching any wiring, because that is the line you never cross. Work through these first.

1. Check your other gas appliances. If your hob or gas fire won't work either, the problem may be the gas supply rather than the boiler.

2. If you're on a prepay meter, check it has credit. A meter that has run down will shut off the gas to the boiler.

3. Reset the boiler once, following the steps in your Vaillant manual. Reset only once.

Stop there. Anything beyond this, the gas valve, the wiring to it, or the PCB, means working on a live gas component or the control board, which is illegal for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered. If F61 comes back after a single reset, book an engineer rather than resetting again, because repeated resets will not clear a genuine gas valve or PCB fault.

When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer

If your other gas appliances work and a single reset does not clear it, F61 needs a gas valve, wiring and PCB check by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That's specialist, legally restricted work, not a DIY job, and repeated resets will not fix it.

A gas-valve or PCB fault is a bigger job than a simple reset, so the parts and labour can add up. That's worth weighing against how you'd rather cover it, a one-off repair or an ongoing module.

You can book a one-off repair with us and a Gas Safe registered engineer will come and fix it, or call us on 0333 772 6247. A Smart Plan boiler and central heating module covers parts and labour up to £500 a year if your boiler is under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it's over 7. A new gas valve or PCB can cost more than the yearly limit on an older boiler, so you would pay anything above the limit yourself. Cover is modular, so you only pick what you want.

A few things worth knowing before you set up cover. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan doesn't cover, if the engineer can't get access, and for early annual-service requests. Cover-plan call-outs run Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00; outside those hours you're only seen sooner for a genuine emergency breakdown as set out in your terms, so a fault on a Friday evening or over the weekend can wait until Monday. And using any module starts a 12-month agreement period from the first time you use a service. There's a 14-day cooling-off period, but it ends the moment a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.

Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance. In plain terms, it's a membership that arranges and funds covered repairs up to the limits on your plan, rather than a regulated financial product. It doesn't pay out a cash sum, and cover is limited to the modules you've chosen and the limits set out in your terms. It's provided by UK Boiler Company Ltd, which has traded since 2014 and looked after over 15,000 customers.

One safety note: if you ever smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, don't wait for an engineer, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away.

Vaillant F61 fault code FAQs

What does F61 mean on a Vaillant boiler?

F61 is a gas valve actuation fault. The boiler's control board (PCB) cannot correctly operate the gas valve, so the boiler locks out for safety. The usual causes are a faulty or seized gas valve, a wiring fault between the PCB and the valve, or a faulty PCB.

Can I fix a Vaillant F61 fault myself?

There is very little to do safely. You can check that your other gas appliances work, that a prepay meter has credit, and reset the boiler once. Anything involving the gas valve, its wiring, or the PCB must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, so do not open the boiler.

Will resetting clear a Vaillant F61 fault?

A single reset is worth trying in case the lockout was a one-off. If F61 returns, resetting again will not fix it, because a genuine gas valve, wiring or PCB fault needs an engineer. Repeated resets on a gas fault are unsafe, so book a Gas Safe registered engineer instead.

Is a Vaillant F61 fault an emergency?

F61 is a safety lockout, so the boiler is off rather than running unsafely. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately. Otherwise it is safe to leave the boiler off and book a Gas Safe registered engineer to check the gas valve and PCB.

If I set up Smart Plan cover, am I tied in?

Cover is billed monthly, but the first time you use a service a 12-month agreement period begins. There is a 14-day cooling-off period that ends once a service is carried out, and leaving early after that costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, also applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan does not cover, no-access visits and early annual-service requests. Smart Plan is a service plan, not insurance, so it funds covered repairs up to your cover limit rather than paying out a cash sum.

Seeing F61 on your Vaillant? We'll come and fix it for you.

Book a one-off repair and a Gas Safe registered engineer will check the gas valve, wiring and PCB, or set up a Smart Plan boiler and central heating module so covered repairs are handled up to your cover limit, up to £500 a year for a boiler under 7 years old, or up to £200 a year if it's older. It's a service plan, not insurance, so it funds covered repairs rather than paying out a cash sum. A £95 call-out fee, paid in advance, applies in your first 30 days, for faults the plan doesn't cover, no-access visits and early annual-service requests. Cover-plan call-outs are Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00 unless it's a genuine emergency. Using a module starts a 12-month agreement period once you first use a service; leaving early costs the remaining months or 75% of the outstanding balance.
